I have always had a love of science and the human body since childhood, however my passion to go on to become a doctor has only flared up recently. In my final year of University, I was diagnosed with an eating disorder. My GP was adamant my illness could be overcome. She did everything in her power to ensure that I received the best possible care for my needs. Without her help and support I would likely not be here today. She has had a more profound impact on my life than anyone I have ever known, and it is from this experience that I have come to realise I want to help others in the way my doctor helped me. Her professionalism, dedication, and caring nature is a large part of what has inspired me to pursue a medical career.
I was a first aider with the Order of Malta Ambulance Corps for five years, in what was the most rewarding and valuable experience of my life. While on duty I assessed, diagnosed, and treated patients for injuries. This experience advanced my ability to evaluate uncertain, complex situations, teaching me how to apply my knowledge in a proficient and timely manner. My empathy skills grew immensely as I began to realise the delicate nature of patients’ vulnerability and understand that each situation must be treated differently subject to the patient’s unique situation. I took on additional cardiac responder courses to boost my skills and competencies in the treatment of patients. I not only have a background in first aid; my degree has provided me a basis in biomedical scientific principles, medical method and knowledge, and comprehension of the genetic basis of diseases. I presently work for a medical device company that has exposed me to the advanced technology surgeons use daily. I have watched numerous videos of these devices being implemented in surgery, which has demonstrated the extensive breadth of knowledge and patience a doctor must have to ensure a patient receives adequate care. I am currently balancing fulltime work whilst studying for a further qualification in Anatomy and Physiology to help fulfil my desire to learn more about the human body, whilst aiding in a future career as a doctor.
Outside of work I volunteer for multiple causes, including SONAS, Jigsaw, the Irish blood transfusion service, STEM fairs, etc. In college I was a lab teaching assistant and a student connect mentor, which allowed me to acquire proactive interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate complex information. I undertook these endeavours whilst balancing fulltime study and part-time work. While working in the fast-paced hospitality sector I conversed and engaged with people of all backgrounds and ages; something which I believe essential to a career in medicine. In April I independently organised a fundraising event that accrued over €700 in aid of the national charity for youth mental health, an experience that greatly improved my organisational skills. Earlier this year I partook in a suicide prevention course, where I developed valuable empathetic and communication skills. This also taught me how to adaptively approach difficult situations. Each of these experiences have allowed me to foster leadership skills, as well as improving on my ability to follow leadership. One of my hobbies includes art which has been vital in teaching me patience and resilience. I am the design lead for two project groups in my workplace, exemplifying that I collaborate well in a team.
I believe that I am an ideal candidate to study medicine as I have the leadership, teamwork, and communication skills essential to becoming a great doctor. I am a self-motivated, empathetic, enthusiastic individual who possesses the qualities of compassion, commitment, and care exemplified by those working in healthcare. Life has provided me with various experiences that have granted me attributes and skills that would allow me to thrive in the challenging environment of medicine and allow me to positively impact on patients’ lives as a doctor.
