Introduction to Identity Theft

Identity theft is a serious crime where someone wrongfully uses your personal information to impersonate you with the intent to commit fraud. Criminals often collect others' names, driver's licenses, or Social Security Numbers. They specifically target Social Security Numbers because they can easily establish false lines of credit and accumulate significant debt in your name. Additionally, someone can commit criminal acts while using your identity. Criminals can obtain this information by hacking into your emails, Facebook, and other social media platforms.

Identity Theft and The Ways to Prevent Cyber Crime

Most online teens believe that their identity could be stolen primarily due to the content they post on their social media accounts. Another reason identity theft happens to teens is highlighted in a study by the Family Online Safety Institute (2019), which found that 34% of teens have shared their username and password with someone other than their parent or guardian. Sharing passwords with others increases the likelihood of identity theft. You will often know if you’re a victim when unusual activities begin to occur, such as a decrease in bank balance, increased debt, unauthorized posts on your social media, or online crimes you weren't involved in. Hackers can infiltrate your online banking accounts and use your information to benefit themselves.

Preventing Identity Theft Online

To prevent identity theft online, never share your password with others. Keep your password as secret as possible. When creating a password, make it complex enough that no one can easily guess it or hack it. Secondly, avoid using your real name in your password. When making payments online, ensure your browser is protected by online safety programs or antivirus software. Never save card numbers or PINs on websites. Make sure to enable all security features such as WPA encryption. Change the default password and SSID on your wireless router. It's advisable to log off completely and close your browser after finishing a secure session. Furthermore, don't download files or click hyperlinks from strangers.

By following these guidelines, individuals can significantly reduce their risk of falling victim to identity theft. Increased awareness and proactive measures are essential in safeguarding personal information against cybercriminals.
