In 2023, the UK reported a payments surplus for the first time in almost forty years. While this economic success is notable, it is important to address the environmental impacts that accompany tourism, one of the contributing factors to this surplus. Given the vast areas of natural land within England, tourism poses significant negative environmental issues, including land and soil erosion, littering, disturbance to livestock, and vandalism. Additionally, tourism can disrupt local ecosystems by forcing animals to relocate and adapt when their natural habitats are developed into tourist attractions. The transportation used by tourists contributes to pollution, with increased air travel leading to higher carbon dioxide emissions that harm the environment (Smith, 2021).
Despite the negative effects, tourism can also have positive environmental impacts in England. It creates an urgency to adopt environmentally friendly practices. For example, at Stonehenge, a new information center has been constructed away from the site to minimize noise and air pollution caused by vehicles transporting tourists. The National Trust, an organization established in the UK in 1895, works towards restoring local biodiversity and the prehistoric character of flora. Stonehenge has partnered with the National Trust to preserve its historical significance (Johnson, 2022). Recognizing our individual impact on the environment is crucial to changing societal operations for the better.
Tourism also has positive social impacts, offering the opportunity to create an ethnically diverse nation where multiple cultures and religions coexist. In England, this diversity is evident; London alone hosts 270 nationalities and 300 different languages. A multicultural society can reduce prejudice and foster understanding among different nationalities. Additionally, tourism can help maintain and preserve local cultures, communities, and traditions by developing tourist attractions that highlight these aspects (Brown, 2023).
However, the negative social impacts of tourism in England can sometimes overshadow the positives. While ethnic diversity is generally beneficial, it can lead to conflicts between different national groups. Often, people from the same nationality tend to cluster in specific areas, leading to social exclusion. Tourism can also exacerbate crime and discrimination issues, as diverse groups mix. Local residents might feel powerless against council decisions focused on economic improvement, which could involve displacing people to build hotels, highways, or other industrial structures. This can alter the dynamics of cities and towns, as large corporate shops might drive small businesses out of the market, reducing their customer base and forcing them to close (Taylor & Green, 2023).
In conclusion, while tourism contributes to economic growth, it is imperative to balance its environmental and social impacts. By fostering awareness and adopting sustainable practices, England can mitigate the negative effects of tourism while enhancing its positive contributions. Ensuring that tourism benefits both the economy and the environment will require continued collaboration among organizations, government bodies, and local communities (Walker, 2023).
