Payments surplus in 2023, almost forty years since the UK last reported a surplus. Due to the vast amounts of country land found within England one of the biggest negative environmental issues that’s caused by tourism is the destruction to the environment. This involves the erosion of the land and soil, litter, disturbance to livestock and vandalism. Tourism can also affect ecosystems that live within the environment through a variety of ways. If a tourist attraction site is built in a place that would normally be an animals habitat this forces the animal's to relocate and sometimes develop a new way of living. Transport taken by tourists create large amounts of pollution and an increase in air travel causes an increase in carbon dioxide emission causing harm to the environment.
Some of the positive impacts tourism can have on the environment in England include the urgency and pressure to become an environmentally friendly service. An example of this is Stonehenge, they have recently built a new information centre that is positioned away from the Stonehenge site so noise pollution and air pollution from cars and coaches carrying tourists won't be harmful to the stones. An organisation that begun in the United Kingdom in 1895 which aims towards restoring the biodiversity and prehistoric character of the local flora is National Trust. In order to try and preserve the historical site, Stonehenge has recently partnered with National trust. Being aware of the environment and the impact us as individuals have on it is one of the biggest, most important things that can help change the way we operate in today's society.
Some of the positive social impacts of tourism in England include the opportunity to create an ethnically diverse nation where different cultures and religion can be practiced in one location. Through tourism in England this has been achieved as in London alone there are 270 nationalities and 300 different languages spoken. By having a multicultural nation it takes away the prejudice view many people have on others from different nationalities. Tourism may also help maintain and preserve local cultures, communities and traditions due to the tourist attraction that may be developed.
However there are many negative social impacts of tourism in England that sometimes outweigh the positive ones. Although the idea of an ethnically diverse nation is a favorable one majority of the time it does not work out well and can lead to conflict between various nations. Often people of the same nationality end up living in the same area excluded from society. Crime and discrimination is also an evident problem that may arise due to large amounts of ethnically diverse nations mixing together. Tourism can also lead to local residents feeling like they have no choice on what the council decides as the council's main focus is to improve the country's economy. This means that people may be pushed out of towns or houses so hotels, highways or other industrial building can be built. It can also change the dynamics of cities and towns if big corporate shops are built as it decreases the amount of customers the small shops receive causing them to shut down.
