Implementation and Demand of The Army Sharp Program

Could you live with hurting someone mentally and physically? When someone commits sexual assault and or harassment, that is exactly what they’re doing. Sexual harassment and or assault is the act and crime of unwanted touching, grabbing and or fondling. Not only is it physical but verbally abusive as well. Name calling in a direct manner or calling someone out on an act in a sexual manner, asking for a favor or returning a favor, to include jokes intentional and unintentional, may cause past memories of pain and or mental harm to cause a victim of circumstances that was undeserving of the crime. Sexual harassment and sexual assault continue to take place in the United States Army. Due to lack of self-discipline even though education and training are provided.

Lack of self-discipline could be the reason sexual assault and or harassment occur. Some people don’t have filters. Think of a car it needs an oil filter to remove the dirt. People have the tendency to ignore their filters. Being a leader in the military means we needs to have these filters regardless of rank and time in our profession. SHARP has included training in all military schools as well as military instillations to give our soldiers as well as leaders of all ranks the tool we need to thrive to be the professionals we know to be and should be. “The Army employs SHARP training during initial military training (MIT); Basic Combat Training(BCT), Basic Officer Leadership Course (BOLC)-Assessment.” (U.S. Army SHARP) not only to include SHARP continues to teach 90min to 2 hour classes depending on the school and or instillation. SHARP also includes training for the civilian education system. Training that covers the topics of what is sexual assault, harassment, and abuse. How to handle yourself in a similar situation, ways to prevent these situations and how help others in these uncomftorable times.

Reduction of the Army SHARP program in the last year has rised due to recent studies that sexual assault and harassment cases have increased from the year 2016 to 2019. “The Pentagon estimates that about 20,500 service members across the military branches- about 13,000 women and 7,500 men- were sexually assaulted in the year, based on data from an anonymous survey that’s complied by the Department of Defense every two years’’ (Kirby, Jen) therefore the evidence I have gathered supports that sexual assault and harassment are increasing In the most recent years.

I believe that in order to end sexual harassment and or assault the Department of Defense should continue to pursue the implementation of SHARP. Continuing to do briefs and training for DOD members and civilians in order to maintain physical and mental discipline of our troops and DOD service members. SHARP should continue to work towards the end goal of ending all sexual assault, harassment and abuse, as well as possibly push further such as the way they do with new troops. To add to this debate SHARP should implement more training on Post instillations I feel there is a lack of discipline in our DOD instillations and should continuing to raise the standard, protect and inform our soldiers to better respond and fight this threat.

Sexual harassment and sexual assault continue to take place in the United States Army because lack of self-discipline even though education and training are provided. People in the US Army needs to have filters so that we can be the leaders that we need to be. Bettering our self’s and others around us. Sexual assault and or harassment is increasing in the most recent years, to end sexual harassment and or assault the Department of Defense should continue to enforce and further implement SHARP.
