Improving Your Vocabulary is a Piece of Cake

Being a student, we always deal with words and numbers that basically involve lots and lots of reading. As a Journalist way back my junior days, I’ve always deal in making feature articles, news, editorial, and sports articles. Since they belong in different fields, several types and varieties of words are being used. Having a small vocabulary indeed is a major disadvantage especially in excelling in this field. In order to surpass this adversity, let me share to you my secret strategy.

Enhancing one’s vocabulary doesn’t have to be grand where you need to find a tutor or to spend money in buying textbooks. Just like the saying, “All great things come from small beginnings”, why not start with what you already have.

Reading

Yes, it all comes down in reading. It may be in the form of a novel, poetry, and even memes that are posted on different online platforms. In addition to that, we really can’t avoid equivocate words that sometimes leaves us thinking what meaning it possesses. The first English novel that I have red is Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. It was the first time that I have encountered lots and lots of foreign words that I have heard for the first time. After finishing it, with the help of dictionary of course, it dawn on me that I am able to expand my vocabulary by just reading one book. Therefore, I can conclude that if I can at least read a chapter or two in a day, it can help maximizing my ability to further enhance my vocabulary.

Creating a Habit

Make it also a habit to at least learn a foreign word or two every day. Let me give you some examples;

Indolent- avoiding labor and exertion; lazy

Ken- perception; understanding; knowledge

Nefarious- wicked in the extreme

Obviate- to prevent by interception

Pecuniary- relating to money

I often write these words in a sticky note and place it either in my door, in the refrigerator, and in my study table. It really helps me familiarize the words if I see and read them from time to time.

Have Fun

Like I’ve said, let’s forget those old and boring ways of learning. Due to modernization, we can finally have fun while learning. Several word game apps are the trend these days. Some of the most-played and downloaded apps are Wordscapes, Bookworm, 4 Pics 1 Word, Word Cross, Word Link and many more. These are accessible to use ubiquitously. Playing and learning, it couldn’t be better, right? It’s like killing two birds with one stone.

With these three easy steps, I am able to improve my vocabulary and still aiming for more improvement. Every individual has their own unique ways of learning, and I really suggest maximizing what you find the most convenient. The need to nurture our vocabulary is really significant in terms of communication. Lastly, learning should be done by heart to make it last a lifetime.
