The purpose of writing this proposal is to show how the hot weather is a very huge problem faced by students and teachers in schools and universities. Beside on spending time in the house, students spend most of their day either in the school or the university, so having an acceptable indoor air quality is very essential (Rossbach, 2013). According to Rossbach. (2013), “Classroom ventilation rates often do not meet building standards, although it is considered to be important to improve indoor air quality. Poor indoor air quality is thought to influence both children’s health and performance” (p.1). Although many students worldwide struggle with the hot weather and its bad consequences, a solution can be done by which it is installing air conditioners in the classes.
Installing air conditioners in the classes has many advantages that helps students and teachers. According to Adams, a high percentage of absences is linked due to sickness in schools with impoverished ventilations, however, expanding the air flow in all California classrooms to state-mandated ventilation rates may have possibly critical impacts, figured out the analysts at the Lawrence Berkeley National Research laboratory, large state of finance is expanding in schools by 33$ million due to the reduction of absences by 3.4 percent in schools since schools are financed based on normal day by day participation (Adams, 2013). Moreover, a conclusion of a deep study done by Jisung Park shows that hot weather has a negative effect on the learning and the performance of students in tests and exams, in fact, if students took an exam on a 90-degree day the percentage of failing will be more than 12 percent on contrast to a 72-degree day (Barnum, 2017). So, having an air conditioner in the class will reduce the percentage of absences along with the failing grades.
Adding air conditioners to the classes needs many methods and experiments to be done so that a perfect result would be obtained. According to Rossbach, a study was made by which it is called the FRESH study which refers to Forced-ventilation Related Environmental School Health in many randomly participating schools. In the performed experiment, there were two experimental groups and one control group, by which the teachers were asked to ventilate the classrooms by opening the doors or windows, and then a device was installed and with an exterior flow fan placed outside on the wall, by which it was provided with an air pump that heats or cools the outdoor air before giving it to the classroom. This experiment showed that during summer the air given in the class was cooler than the air outside while in the winter season the air inside the class was hotter than that outside so that the temperature inside the class was suitable for all the seasons (Rossbach, 2013). So many experiments for the design and outdoor and indoor measurements have to be done.
Installing air conditioners to classes is expensive and needs a huge budget, but the results after adding the ACs are very expressive in many ways. As Barnum (2017) mentioned, “ New York City where 1.1 million students attend the nation’s largest public school system, announced in April that it would spend $29 million to air-condition every classroom by 2022. “More than a quarter of the city’s classrooms, about 11,000 classrooms, don’t have air conditioning,” New York City Councilman Brad Lander told WCBS radio in the early spring. “And you know, on a cool day like today, that’s OK, but on an increasing number of days in May and June and September, it’s just too hot to learn that kids can’t focus and concentrate.”” (p.1). However, Adams has mentioned that large state of finance is expanding in schools by 33$ million dues to the reduction of absences by 3.4 percent in schools since schools are financed based on normal day by day participation after adding air conditioners to classes (Adams, 2013). So, there is a warranty that no dollar will go to trash.
Everything that is to be trusted needs a prove that is formed by statistics and facts and for this reason we made a survey that will show the importance of installing air conditioners. The results of my survey showed that 12 out of 20 students attend the summer semester and they think that it is too hot to learn in this weather, 10 out of 20 students get really tired because of the hot weather and 8 sometimes get tired. Moreover, 6 students would like to take the summer semester between the fall and spring semester and almost 14 students get the understanding interrupted due to the hot weather (some of them depending on how hot it is). Finally, 13 students get more relaxed and better understanding with an AC in class while 4 out of 20 have headaches and feel cold with the AC and 2 students don’t mind the AC. Therefore, more than half of the students prefer having an air conditioner in class in the summer semester.
Finally, we end our proposal by advising the readers and all the universities to add air conditioners to the classes to increase the levels of understanding and concentration during lessons and exams. For reaching success and person should work hard and study well. So, for a better way of studying, there should be a good atmosphere and an acceptable temperature in classes.
