I first gained interest in nursing when my dad was ill, and I could hear him crying in pain at night. The nurse used to visit him at our home. I then asked her several questions about her profession, and from there, I developed an interest in nursing. I went on to study health and social care, gaining Level 2 and Level 3 adult care diplomas, along with many mandatory courses such as health and safety, wound cleaning, stomach care, mental health, risk assessment, and other health-related subjects. Currently, I am enrolled in Access to health program, studying units like cell biology, developmental anatomy, human growth, and other health sciences. I have made many sacrifices to begin my access course and continue to achieve my goals through my studies.
The nursing pathway comes with many commitments that I am willing to take on as they will help me reach my goal of becoming a nurse. This course will enable me to develop new skills and gain knowledge that is relevant to my chosen pathway. Additionally, I have Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths, which are important for writing risk assessments and care plans for administering medications. Roles and responsibilities are among the many units included in my access to health course. This unit helps me understand the roles that nurses have to provide, along with the responsibilities that come with their role. From this unit, I have gained an understanding of legislation, codes of conduct, and various other guidelines that are important to follow, allowing me to complete my role professionally in scenarios such as placements.
In my early 20s, I completed two weeks of placement at Good Hope Hospital, where I shadowed nurses in assisting with medication. This experience was important to me as I was able to participate in many activities and learn new skills to develop my knowledge and work alongside different healthcare professionals.
Through my hospital experience, I learned various skills, including completing risk assessments, catheter care, and stomach care. I have always found great pleasure in helping others, especially since I empathize with the ill due to my dad's experience. Observing the nurse's close relationship with my dad and my family influenced my decision to study nursing. I aspire to provide the same level of relationship and support to families in need.
Nursing is a demanding and challenging career, but I believe the rewards will be great, and I am ready to embark on this journey. Being a nurse would allow me to fulfill my ambition, and I am dedicated and reliable in developing relationships with patients quickly. I strive to achieve the best in all I do and take pride in ensuring everything I do is of a high standard.
