How The Chinese View Food in Eat Drink Man Woman

In China, we have an idiom that is “ Food is most important to people, safety food comes first.” which means people cannot life without foods. As a result, eat with drink mean foods and man with woman mean feelings that are people basically desires. The movie runs around the foods and feelings; food can be wrapped belly and feelings can be comforted by the soul. The farther Lao Zhu is a chef who is famous in Taiwan. In the beginning of movie shows his superb culinary skill, he cooks a lot of dishes for his daughters that is their family gathering on weekend and all of the family members must on there. This kind of dinner is only one activity to keep their family relationship, and it is cold and emotionless.

In the movie, total has six times. The first dinner, a lot of foods on the table, but everyone's appetite is not good. Lao Zhu was planning to announce one thing, but was interrupted by his second daughter, Jiaqian. She announced she had bought a house and planned to move out. Lao Zhu was very angry. Because traditional Chinese believe, children should live with their parents before their get married.The second dinner, Jiaqian’s house had problem. Lao Zhu told her, she could keep living in his house. I think Lao Zhu really wanted Jiaqian stayed whit him. The third dinner, this family had changed. Because the younger sister, Jianing had married. Her families were surprised with this news. When Lao Zhu seen his daughter leave, his feeling was complicated. The fourth dinner, Lao Zhu's best friend Wen died, he was so sad, like he lost his tongue and gustation. However, the older sister, Jiazhen got her love, she decided to get married with a PE teacher who are in the same school. He lamented that his older daughter was finally married. The fifth dinner was big gathering and is also the climax of the film. Finally, Lao Zhu said his secret. He wants to get married with Jinrong. Everyone was against them, but their faith is firm. The last dinner, in the their old house Jiaqian was banned into the kitchen, she continued Lao Zhu Sunday tradition of dinner, but also inherited his craft and life attitude. When Lao Zhu drank his daughter's soup, he found his "taste" again. His father and daughter held hands and the picture of the soup was very warm.
