Jane Eyre is a book written about a fictional girl living most likely during the Victorian era. In Jane Eyre Charlotte Bronte, the books author, uses both gothic and romantic elements to set the scenes and tell the story of this girl. There is two important points for both the gothic side and the romantic sides that I will be analyzing. The two gothic points are: when the tree is struck with lightning after the walk in the garden and when Bertha rips Jane’s veil in her closet. The two points for the romantic elements are: when jane and Rochester are walking in the garden and when saint John asks jane to marry him.
The first gothic point is when the chestnut tree was struck by lightning and exploded. This is an important scene because right before the tree was struck Jane and Rochester confessed their love for one another. The event foreshadows the future of Jane and Rochester being split apart. The second important point is when Bertha is seen tearing in half Jane’s new wedding veil. This event is another foreshadowing event about Jane and Rochester’s future. Bronte is trying to set a picture before us of the pain and struggles Jane will go through trying to marry Rochester. Just like the tree struck by lightening Jane will receive some news about Rochester that will break faith in Rochester. Also with the ripping for her veil shadows how jane’s heart will be torn upon hearing this news.
Jane Eyre is full of romantic elements however I feel like these two events have the greatest impact. The first event is when Jane and Rochester are walking through the garden and they confesss their love for each other. This is important because ever since Jane made it to Thornfield she has had feelings for Rochester but we never knew his feelings. The second important event is when St. John proposes to Jane. St. John does this multiple time, however Jane continues to say no until one night she almost says yet but realizes the she doesn’t love him but loves Rochester. These two events are important because they both show us important time in Jane’s life. First in the garden Janes is really happy for the first in a while but those is uneasy about marrying Rochester. Finally when she runs from Thornfield and St. John proposes to Jane she realizes that her true love is Rochester.
In conclusion Bronte did a fantastic job writing Jane Eyre. The mix of gothic and romantic elements complemented each other almost seamlessly. Along with providing the reader a little sense of mystery to keep us on edge with suspense. However this book also has some lessons strune thought the book. Perhaps the most important lesson that I got was that no matter what life throws at you as long as you stay strong, persevere and stay true to yourself you will come out on top.
