Something Wicked This Way Comes deems Jim’s temptation as a stepping stone towards misfortune through the reader’s criticism. Jim’s personality compared to Wills’ is viewed as bad because Jim loves adventure, wants to grow up too soon and Will’s personality is viewed as good. The book is about two boys who have opposite personalities and have a scary encounter with a mysterious carnival. Bad deeds and awful events are closely tied to the new carnival that comes into town throughout the book. The mysterious carnival is a place of misfortune ran by evil people. The carnival is new and mysterious which brings out a different evil that the town is not used too. The different evil is so tempting it may destroy the town. The carnival is the wickedness that drives the town’s people apart and puts them together through the fear along with manipulation rather than positive vibes. The carnival’s wickedness influences the town’s people to be selfish and greedy and it is up to the boys and Charles Halloway to combat the wickedness that threatens the community.
To start off with, Jim does not think before he acts. He does not take a moment to think things through the way Will does but rather relies on his gut feeling all the time. Jim really does value his freedom above all else, and he promises to never let anything hurt him ever or have anything that can potentially hurt him. Will is constantly empathic unlike Jim. Jim is capable to show grave concern towards others but at the same time he can be really oblivious to the dangers that surround those he cares about while he is out trying to pursue his own benefit. A great example is when the boys first go to the carnival. Jim is super excited that he does not think twice about it however, Will has mixed emotions about the whole event. Jim’s horrible tunnel vision makes him a horrible friend for Will, especially in the case of the carnival when it nearly lends to drastic results. When Jim has his sights set on something he will not let it go. An example of this is when Jim is describing the carnival to Will. Jim shouts, “See! The skeleton ain't that fine, Will? Not Thin Man, no, but Skeleton! See! The Dust Witch! What's a Dust Witch will?” Will replies, “Dirt Gypse-”(31). This shows that Will is suspicious when it came to the carnival and it was not something of a big deal for Will like it was for Jim. Fortunately, there are characters in the book that are looking out for Jim and his well-being. This connects to my thesis that the Jim’s temptation lends to the misfortune of others.
Jim wanting to grow up faster is another attribute that lends to the misfortune of others. He needs to help Will and Mr. Halloway battle the carnival and yet he is loaded up with wanting to ride the carousel and in a split second grow up. Jim is furiously autonomous and terrified of nothing, and with the fair these characteristics take steps to get him into a circumstance that as a thirteen year old, he won't have the option to escape. Luckily, he has Will and Mr. Halloway to support him. Jim isn't certain of what he needs, and he is the sort who attempts thinks on the off chance that he figures he may like them. The carousel isn't the kind of thing that one can simply attempt and afterward leave. Jim realizes this however will not let it out on the grounds that he is so purpose on going for a ride. The book states, 'No use making more people. People die,' says this in the wake of conversing with his mom (40). This foreshadows Jim's passionate reaction to life and needing to grow up.
Will is Jim's closest companion, and toward the start of the book he is significantly more of a scholar than his companion, who favors activity. In any case, as the story unfurls Will finds that, much like Charles Halloway, he is able to do fast and definitive activity once he has settled on a basic choice. He spares Jim a few times and spares his dad some other time in light of the fact that, in spite of the fact that he is just a thirteen year old kid, he is sure of his insight and accepts that he is making the best choice. Will thinks profoundly about making the wisest decision, and not at all like Jim, he supports inaction when the option is unsafe or dangerous. An example of this is in chapter 46 Will lights a match to stop the images in the mirror maze that is going to crush Will’s Dad. Will is sacrificial, and he runs gigantic dangers to spare Jim in any event, when Jim himself wouldn't really like to be spared. Be that as it may, Will is likewise an exceptionally touchy kid. He comprehends Jim and his dad much better than both of the other two get him. Will is empathic and he feels awful when Mr. Cooger kicks the bucket despite the fact that he doesn't need him alive. In spite of the fact that he is splendid for his age, there is additionally a sweetness in Will. He isn't anxious to grow up in light of the fact that he cherishes life at the present time. He cherishes his folks and he feels terrible that his dad is miserable constantly. Will feels a lot for others to be brutal or pernicious, yet he is certain enough in his thinking to prevent Jim from accomplishing something that Jim needs to do just in light of the fact that he realizes it will be awful for his companion over the long haul. Will likewise has an extraordinary intuition for what the correct activity is, and once in a while his prompt choices are incredibly fast even to Jim.
It was argued that Will was the good character compared to Jim in class because Jim drawn to the darkness of the carnival far more than Will. However, Will thinks he is good because he is happy. In the book it states, 'Sometimes the man who looks happiest in town, with the biggest smile, is the one carrying the biggest load of sin. There are smiles and smiles; learn to tell the dark variety from the light. The seal-barker, the laugh-shouter, half the time he's covering up. He's had his fun and he's guilty. And men do love sin, Will, oh how they love it, never doubt, in all shapes, sizes, colors, and smells'(124). This shows that just because Will does not act impulsively like Jim that it makes him more of a good person. A bad person can still be happy while a good person can still be sad at the same time. A person who shows that they are happy can easily be mistaken for good and that is the reason why there is that assumption. Jim throughout the book is shown to be less happy than Will but that does not make him any less “good”.
Age is additionally a significant topic in this novel on the grounds that Jim is needing to grow up so quick. Charles Halloway discovers that what makes a difference isn't the quantity of years that one has been alive yet the inclination that one has, the adoration forever that one shows. On the off chance that you are youthful on a fundamental level and want just to run like a more youthful kid then you may do as such, even at age fifty-four. Simultaneously, the carousel gives us that physical age can't be believed; it is mental age that is significant. The main age that issues is whether the brain is youthful or old, speedy or moderate. Jim doesn't comprehend this point from the get-go in the novel, just learning it at the end. Indeed, even the quantity of years you have lived doesn't really mirror your psychological or physical age. Review age from such a large number of alternate points of view in some degree breaks down the idea of age. At last, Jim is seen as terrible in light of the fact that he is attracted to the obscurity on the planet. He is only hurting kid that is attempting to discover his place since he is harmed sincerely by not having a father or siblings.
