My current status as a student at Joliet Junior College (JJC) is that I am a returning, part-time student. My educational journey is particularly focused on obtaining an Associate's degree in Early Childhood Education, which I plan to achieve within the next two years. Following this, I aspire to transfer to a four-year institution to pursue a Master's degree in Business. This academic path reflects my long-term goal of combining my passion for education with the skills necessary for effective management and leadership in the educational field.
During my time in college, I have set several goals that are crucial for my personal and academic development:
These objectives are not just about grades; they are about cultivating a mindset that embraces learning and growth. I believe that by improving my study techniques, I can become more efficient and effective in my academic pursuits.
As a 21-year-old African American female and a mother to my five-month-old daughter, I face unique challenges in balancing my responsibilities. At present, I am not employed, which allows me to dedicate most of my time to raising my daughter while also focusing on my studies. Living with my parents in a spacious four-bedroom house provides us with a supportive environment, as my daughter and I share a room. This setup allows me to focus on both my academic goals and my responsibilities as a mother.
However, juggling my time between caring for my daughter and completing homework is a significant challenge. Babies require constant attention and care, which can make it difficult to find time to study effectively. I often find myself prioritizing my daughter's needs, which means I have to be strategic about how I allocate my time for schoolwork.
My choice to study Early Childhood Education stems from my deep interest in child development. I am fascinated by the various stages of growth that children experience and the behaviors they exhibit. Understanding why children act in certain ways, even when those actions may not align with parental expectations, is crucial for effective parenting and education. My studies will equip me with the knowledge to:
Aspect of Development | Importance |
---|---|
Cognitive Development | Understanding how children think and learn. |
Emotional Development | Recognizing and managing emotions in children. |
Social Development | Learning how children interact with others. |
Physical Development | Understanding motor skills and physical growth. |
By delving into these areas, I aim to gain insights that will not only help me as a future educator but also as a parent. The knowledge I acquire will guide me in supporting my daughter's development and helping other parents understand what to expect as their children grow.
In addition to my academic pursuits, I actively engage in community activities. I attend church every Sunday, where I find a sense of belonging and purpose. Helping others in need is something I value deeply, and I often participate in community service initiatives. These experiences enrich my life and reinforce the importance of giving back, which is a value I hope to instill in my daughter.
Living with my parents has its advantages, especially in terms of support. They provide not only emotional backing but also practical assistance with childcare when I need to focus on my studies. This family support system is invaluable as I navigate the complexities of being a student and a mother.
In summary, my journey as a part-time student at Joliet Junior College is one filled with aspirations and challenges. My goal of obtaining an Associate's degree in Early Childhood Education is just the beginning of my educational path, as I plan to further my studies in Business. Balancing motherhood and academics is no small feat, but I am committed to achieving my goals and becoming a knowledgeable and compassionate educator. Through my studies, community involvement, and personal experiences, I aim to create a positive impact in the lives of children and families in the future.
