Kitty and Mack: What Makes Their Romance The Best One

Kitty and Mack: A Love Story is so good because the reader is so invested in the characters. From the beginning, we get a backstory and contextual clues into the thoughts of Mack and Kitty, and begin to get attached to them. That is why, when he loses his foot, the reader has no trouble relating to the pain and suffering that Mack goes through. Kitty’s pain is very relatable as well, since most people have loved without being loved back, at some point in their lives. Had the first part of the story not occurred, the history of Mack’s sports career and Kitty’s life, we would not have a connection to Mack. If the story began with Kitty wanting to love and take care of Mack, and Mack just being cold in return, the reader would not like Mack. Therefore, it is necessary for us to know that he was madly in love with her, had an extremely promising baseball career ahead of him, and has his entire life planned out. Without that, his lack of emotion and motivation after the amputation of his foot would not be so empathetic. On another note, everything seems to be connected, like events towards the end being a result of events from the beginning. This helps to portray the thoughts and motivations for characters’ actions. For example, before the accident when the two are madly in love, Kitty says “Don’t give me no okay, I want to know if you love me”, to which Mack replies “Something like that” (Myers 91). This comes full circle in the last lines of the story, with Mack saying “Kitty you’re not even listening”, to which Kitty replies “Yeah, something like that” (Myers 103). Little details like this help to wrap up a story and give a solid conclusion to the reader. All of these factors in Kitty and Mack: A Love Story culminate in the creation of a great short story.
