Boy Wonder Kylian Mbappe has brought unmatched talent to football, the kind that has not been seen since the time of Pele (some would disagree). However, his record of winning the World Cup at the age of 19 has already made him a legend, it doesn’t matter what happens from now on, Kylian Mbappe will surely be remembered for equalling a couple of Pele’s records. He has also axed a number of his countryman Thiery Henry’s records. Mbappe’s incredible talents have been duly rewarded with accolades and of course record-setting contracts.
Kylian Mbappé Lottin was born on 20 December 1998, in Paris, France. He began playing football as a little child and began his career at AS Bondy, a club where his father served as a youth coach. Mbappe’s skills were immediately evident. One of his coaches, Antonio Riccardi observed that a then-6-year-old Mbappe was the best kid he had coached in 15 years.
From AS Bondy, Mbappe moved to the Clairefontaine academy and it wasn’t long before giant European clubs came calling. From Real Madrid to Bayern Munich, Manchester City, and Chelsea. He made a trip to West London to try out for Chelsea, however, he made up his mind to stay close to home by choosing Monaco. Mbappe joined the Monaco youth academy in 2013 and two years later, at the age of 16, he made it to the senior team.
Mbappe was set to break records and he did just that. Wiping off many previously set by Thierry Henry. A couple include becoming the youngest first-team player in Monaco, and the youngest first team goal scorer. Monaco solidified his stay in the team by offering him his first professional contract on 6 March 2016. It was a 3-year deal that was to keep him at the side till 2019.
Mbappe went on to set records in European competitions placing him on the radar of big teams. He shined further at Russia 2018 scoring his first and only goal of his side in a group stage match against Peru. Mbappe left the World Cup with the FIFA World Cup Best Young Player Award.
Mbappe has his parents to thank for his athletic genes which run deep in his blood. His father Wilfried Mbappé who hails from Cameroun was a soccer player for many years before he began coaching. His mother, on the other hand, was a renowned handball player who played in the First Division of France. She is named Fayza Lamari and hails from Alegria, making Mbappe of Camorunian and Algerian descent which explains his huge fan following from African nations.
Mbappe’s father served as a youth coach for AS Bondy for a whopping 25 years. Before he was offered the job, Wilfried worked with kids in his locale helping to nurture them in sports. AS Bondy president Atmane Airouche had only nice things to say about Mbappe’s father during his interview with BBC.
Before Mbappe’s parents had him, they were already parents to an adopted son Jires Kembo-Ekoko who is also a professional football player. Like his brother, he plays as a striker for Turkish club Bursaspor and is a former youth international for France. Mbappe has a younger biological brother named Ethan Mbappé, who plays for PSG under-12s.
Kylian Mbappe’s current club is the French Ligue 1 side Paris Saint Germain (PSG). He joined the club first on loan before being signed on a record transfer fee of €135 million. The deal sees him earn a salary of 17.5 million EUR from the side.
Mbappe donated his entire £384,000 World Cup salary to a sports charity. His chosen charity named Premiers de Cordee work with disabled and hospitalized children.
