In the last few decades, several man-made unsustainable activities and interventions have accelerated the problems related to shelter, environment, food, health, society, culture and working pattern. These problem-areas are also associated, linked and guided mainly with lifestyles and livelihoods. Appropriate lifestyles and livelihoods can help us to move towards a more healthy, livable and sustainable environment at the household, community and society level. Hence the sub theme of lifestyle and livelihood assumes significance. The idea of this sub theme is to promote the concept of conscious and cautious involvement of science, technology and innovation to evolve sustainable lifestyles& livelihoods. The sub theme looks at several concepts related to the effect of occupational, cultural and environmental changes and their relations with lifestyles and livelihoods. This subtheme shall in addition to its focus on the negative impacts also look at the positive impacts on lifestyle and livelihood and identify these as opportunities for a sustainable future. A lifestyle typically reflects an individual’s attitudes, way of life, values, or world view. Therefore, a lifestyle is a means of forging a sense of self and to create cultural symbols that resonate with personal identity. Not all aspects of a lifestyle are voluntary. Surrounding social and technical systems can constrain the lifestyle choices available to the individual and the symbols she/he is able to project to others and the self.

Lifestyles refer to the way we live our lives, what we do, with whom, where, how and what we used to do earlier. Lifestyles define our identity. We express our social position, political preferences and psychological aspirations to others through our lifestyles. Livelihood comprises of the capabilities, assets and activities required for a means of living. Livelihood is defined as a means of supporting one’s existence, especially financially or vocationally. Lifestyles and livelihood are mainly driven by certain crucial factors such as Desires, Needs, Influencers and Motivators. These factors link and define an individual’s patterns of living, consumption, migration, travel, health and work. The changes in the patterns of livelihood and lifestyle further define the perceptions or actions of humans towards skills, sensitivity, habits, behavior, economy and culture.

Lifestyle and livelihood is about life and living at individual, group, community and society levels in the context of one’s cultural and environmental norms and sensitivity. It covers all our choices and actions – whether at home or at work -on energy use, transport, food, waste, communication and occupation. The influence of the media on the psychosocial development of children is profound. Thus, it is important for physicians to discuss with parents their child’s exposure to media and to provide guidance on age-appropriate use of all media, including television, radio, music, video games and the Internet.

Aims & objectives: – The idea of this sub theme is to promote the concept of conscious and cautious involvement of science, technology and innovation to evolve a sustainable lifestyle &livelihood. The sub theme looks at several concepts related to the effect of:-

  • Occupational changes,
  • Cultural changes and

  • Environmental changes and its relation with lifestyle and livelihood.

The subtheme not only tries to focus on the negative impacts but also on positive impacts on lifestyle and livelihood and identifying them as opportunities to carry forward for developing a sustainable future. The concept of Sustainable development consists of 3 main pillars which are

  • People (Social),
  • Planet (Environment) and
  • Profit (Economy).

All these three main pillars of Sustainable development are interwoven with Lifestyle and Livelihood and both have an effect on each other. Current lifestyles and consumption patterns are unsustainable. Human behavior is changing very rapidly which has been challenging the environmental factors and situational factors. There are several patterns of unsustainability observed in the health of humans and food security patterns at a national level. Malnutrition and other diseases is a major area of concern at national level .Our aspirations for prosperity is intrinsically linked to current patterns of unsustainable economic growth. Due to the digital divide there is a great gap visible between the communities and families. There is a massive cultural shift visible .The occupational patterns have been changing rapidly and thus creating a great number of unemployment for unskilled members. There are also great numbers of health hazards increasing due to changes in livelihood patterns. The rural population is increasingly migrating from the rural areas to urban areas. it is a fact that the lifestyle of the people has changed very much in the last 2 decades compared to the lifestyle, especially since after the adoption of the globalisation and liberalisation policies IN THE ECONOMIC SECTOR our country in the early 1990s. in the backdrop of the above we decided to conduct a survey TO know the pro and adverse IMPACT AND IMPLICATION on the people of our area as a result of their changed lifestyle and livelihood. through this survey which we planned to conduct in the form of seeking answer to our questionnaire from the selected section of the public from different areas of our locality by visiting them in groups and find out the problems being faced by them, so that we can try to find out some possible solutions to overcome this.

Hypothesis: As the peoples are changing each minute, there should be a great change in their lifestyle. as the world is developing day by day, the human lifestyle also changing automatically erupting various hurdles in the smooth running of our society. in many cases generation gap is also one OF THE REASONS for the problems in the lifestyle. as a smooth function of the society is necessary, some kind of changes/adjustments is needed in our lifestyle so that both old and new generation groups of our population can be accepted.

THERE ARE DIFFERENT PHASES/WAYS TO CONDUCT PROJECTS. first upon we have to draft the method and aim of the project and likely outcome should be ascertained. the project may be MAY BE SURVEY BASED OR WORKING MODELS. since our proposed project is to find out the impact of changed lifestyle in the society, WE planned to collect the data by approaching the people from different cross sections of the society with a questionnaire related to their lifestyle in the form of a survey. in this regard, we prepared a questionnaire containing 15 questions related to the public life with an aim to find out the positive and negative impacts of the lifestyle in the society. for this purpose we categorised the society in the way of age group, profession, economic status, etc. the survey was conducted by visiting the people of above classes during a period of one month, in different parts of the our locality.

Methodology:- for conducting the survey we have prepared a questionnaire, seeking details related to the lifestyle of different categories such as eating habits, PHYSICAL activity, state of mind, profession, etc. we have prepared the questionnaire containing a total of 15 points like:- questionnaire

  1. How often do you eat out? (sandwiches, fast food, pizza, barbecue, Chinese food…)
  2. How many meals do you eat a day?
  3. Do you drink sweet drinks? (fruit juice or fruit drinks, soft drinks or energizing drinks, iced tea, lemonade…) and how often?
  4. How often do you get around on foot or by bicycle?
  5. Are you having the habit of drinking alcohol, smoking, chewing tobacco?
  6. How old were you when you started the above habit?
  7. Do you have a peaceful sleep every day?
  8. Do you feel constantly under strain?
  9. Over the last 12 months have you ever suffered from any of the diseases?
  10. What is your current employment status?
  11. Approximately how long have you lived in this area?
  12. How many times have you eaten out in a restaurant in the past month?
  13. What kind of vehicles do you have?
  14. How often you conduct leisure trips?
  15. Have you ever visited abroad? If yes how many times?

Data Analysis:- Ø On the basis of the data collected during the survey regarding the use of drugs and other narcotics in the society, it was revealed that nearly 70.5% of people whom contacted were in the habit of using any of the narcotic items like smoking, chewing tobacco, consuming alcohol, drugs, etc. a chart prepared in this regard shown that a total of 52 members were with the habit of smoking, 23 persons were consuming alcohol and 10 persons were using drugs

Conclusions:- there are more disadvantages than advantages due to changing lifestyle has noticed during the course of our survey. it has cropped mainly due to lack of social interaction among the people and stress by way of profession. if this situation continues, the society may goes to a serious disastrous situation. to overcome from this social interaction among the people should be increased so that they cannot feel an ISOLATION in the society, which is one of the main causes for the present situation in the society. as we cannot change the present work culture, social interactions among the society may bring out the people from the strain developed due to their new work culture up to some extent. for this purpose community programs should be organised in the form of leisure / picnic trips, weekly / monthly get-togethers, organising community lunch, organising festivals / programs together in the society, etc. creating common places like children’s parks, sports clubs, etc, in each society may also bring the people in that society more closer by way of daily interactions.

Results: during the course of our survey among different cross sections of the society, we have come across many advantages and disadvantages of the changed lifestyle in the society. the disadvantages were more than advantages due to changing lifestyle in the society. the people were slowly losing their social interaction due to their changing life style and also due to their changed work culture. this is pulling the society into an insecure situation and mental stress and tension has also noticed in increased level in the society. it has noticed that many of the persons were not seeing or contacting their neighbours even once in a week. Some of them were not aware of the details of their neighbourhood. it is felt during the survey THAT IF this situation continues, the society may goes to a serious disastrous situation. the changed FOOD HABBITS OF THE SOCIETY HAS ALSO MADE AN ADVERSE IMPACT IN THE SOCIETY. DUE TO THEIR NATURE OF WORK AND BUSY LIFE, MANY OF THEM PREFER TO TAKE OUTSIDE FOODS VERY FREQUENTLY. SINCE MOST OF THESE FOOD ITEMS ARE Spicy THAN OUR HOME MADE FOODS. THESE FOOD ITEMS ARE BEING PREPARED EYEING ON THE TASTE OF THE CUSTOMERS AND LESS CONCERN ABOUT THEIR HEALTH, RESULTING VARIOUS HIGEINIC RELATED AND Other HEALTH PROBLEMS AMONG THESE SECTIONS OF THE SOCIETY.

Solution to the PROBLEM: WHILE INTERACTING WITH THE PEOPLES OF THE SOCIETY AS PART OF OUR SURVEY, IT HAS FELT THAT MOST OF THEM WERE FEELING INSECURE And isolated situation mainly due to their changed life style and nature of work, resulting more and more stress and tension among them. to overcome from this, social interaction among the people should be increased so that they cannot feel an ISOLATION in the society, which is one of the main causes for the present situation in the society. as we cannot change the present work culture, social interactions among the society may bring out the people from the strain developed due to their new work culture up to some extent. for this purpose community programs should be organised in the form of leisure / picnic trips, weekly / monthly get-togethers, organising community lunch, organising festivals / programs together in the society, etc. creating common places like children’s parks, sports clubs, etc., in each society may also bring the people in that society more closer by way of daily interactions. similarly, the increasing health problems related to changed food habit is also an area of concern in the society. Awareness about the adverse impact on the street foods, spicy foods, etc. should be created among the society to overcome this, by organising campaigns and other awareness programs. social get-togethers and picnic programs may also help the society to have awareness against the changed food habits and its impacts.
