In a film, sound and lighting play an important role as they help to portray the necessary mood and emotion (Jackman, 2010). For example, when filming a horror scene, there is the use of creepy background music and filming in dark or low levels of lighting to showcase the scary and eerie atmosphere for the audience. Both sound and lighting are essential in engaging the audience and evoking the intended emotional response. This essay will explore the various types of sound and lighting used in filmmaking to enhance the storytelling experience.
Firstly, we will look into the sound. There are many different kinds of sounds used in making a film (Holman & Holman, 2010). Sound can be in the form of narration, background music, and sound effects that are used to match the corresponding action that is happening in the film (Holman & Holman, 2010). Throughout the entire storyline, different music and sound effects are employed to guide the audience's emotional journey. The scenes in this film are split into three kinds.
First, we have scenes with only actions and no dialogue. It is crucial that the audience can hear the sound effect or the sound of the actions that the lead is performing. For example, in Scene 2, Vin is looking through his laptop at an advertisement. There will be the sound of him typing on the keyboard. Additional sounds include Vin pulling his luggage while traveling to the landlord's house, knocking on the door, and the landlord slamming the door. These sound effects are vital in creating a realistic and immersive experience. Also, in Scene 8, there will be a shocking sound effect when the landlord is shocked at who Vin really is, further emphasizing the landlord's emotions.
The second kind of scene includes those with actions and dialogue, though there are only a few. Since these are the scenes where the lead needs to talk, it is important that the location is free from noise pollution so that no unnecessary sounds intrude on the scene. Clear dialogue is essential for conveying the narrative and character interactions effectively.
The last type of scenes we have is just words. These scenes appear in the first and last parts of the film. The background music for these scenes is something soft and ambient, setting a tone that supports the narrative's beginning and conclusion. Such scenes often serve as bookends, providing context or resolution to the storyline.
Now, we look into lighting. Different forms of lighting are used to present different scenarios in a film (Jackman, 2010). It is crucial to have appropriate lighting in a video because, without it, all we see in a film would be a black picture (Jackman, 2010). We will be using natural lighting to conduct our filming; thus, it will be shot in the morning and afternoon when the light is the brightest. However, we must consider certain issues that might affect the natural lighting, such as weather conditions and reflecting rays that could be captured by the camera when filming at specific angles. Since most of the scenes will not showcase the lead’s face, it is important that we have the perfect lighting to highlight the actions of what he is doing. Proper lighting ensures that the focus remains on the narrative and the characters' actions, contributing to the overall storytelling.
In conclusion, sound and lighting are indispensable elements in filmmaking that significantly influence how a story is perceived by the audience. By carefully selecting and integrating these elements, filmmakers can enhance the emotional impact and visual appeal of their work, making the narrative more engaging and memorable.
