Media as a Source of Information and Influence

TLC is an American television network that was basically like a discovery channel that only used for the educational purposes and provide knowledge to the people and it displayed distinct shows that make people aware about things such as shows related to gender issues but they were also confused about that identities and other show about boating safety but after, it more focused on family life and personal issues such as 19 kids and counting. I learned that media is a big platform that effect common people life on daily basis because people watch and learn the things. Media is a basic and easily accessible source to world’s information about weather, culture, entertainment and so on. In other words, media is a source of information around the globe. According to my point of view, the information must be real and should be clearer because some wrong information that is showed by the media may mislead the common people.

I like the TLC basic concept that they were used for their shows such as to educate the viewers and as I read in the article that some of their shows were not successful, but their theme seems interesting from my perspective as a common man. Moreover, media should not be under any pressure of politics, but they must work independently. For example, in India, I use to watch news, movies and other shows and I use to see that it represents that Pakistani people are the terrorists but that is not a reality.

On the other hand, it helps a lot to make change in the society with the time. As a woman, I feel like, television change the living standard of woman and the mentality of society toward feminism. It also helped the LGBTQ groups who got their identities in the society rather than to be denied by society. Because people only aware about the heterosexuality and television broaden the audience view about gender identities that should be different.

The show that clearly describe about the LGBT is the Transparent (2009). This is American comedy-drama web television series that has 4 seasons and 40 episodes. It shows different stories of trans-woman who have mixed feeling and other LGBT cases where they leave their partners because of they have feeling for trans-man. This show basically run for short time, but it clearly shows the LGBT and their feelings that they have. It is opposite to the show named “My husband’s not gay” because in that show they were confused about the gender identities as well as they show that how therapies can change the gender, but it is really harmful for people and show that sex is impossible but in that show, they make funny scenes but with the acceptance of gender and feelings that one has in his/her personality. It shows the opposite that, sexually is not a problem in LGBT and they have they normal lives too.
