Miley Cyrus: The Great Qualities that Make Him an Outlier

Miley Cyrus is a very successful american singer, songwriter, and actress. Throughout the past 10 years Miley has transformed from an innocent, cute Hannah Montana to an extremely expressive and crazy woman of the name Miley Cyrus. It may appear that Miley is successful because of her talent and her twerking on stage. However, according to Gladwell's theory of success, The 10,000 hour rule, being born into success are the hidden factors that actually contributed to Miley Cyrus's success and the Matthew effect was not.

The 10,000 hour rule applies to Miley Cyrus because she has performed over and over and has practiced most of her life singing and she has become very successful because of it. Throughout the years Miley has been doing many different things that have, whether she intended to or not, made her very famous today. Some things that she did were risky to her career and to her image, such as when she shed her Hannah Montana image and brought her new look and attitude to the stage for the 2013 VMAs. Some people were offended by Miley twerking for her performance but others loved it, many people were talking about their opinion of Miley after this. An article on MTV news states “Whether you agree with everything she did on stage or not , you can’t deny the impact her actions had: Three months after the VMAs we’re still talking about it.” If someone wants to remain successful and famous they have to rebrand their career often. When Hannah Montana was not a huge hype anymore she created who she is now. Miley Cyrus took a huge risk but in return she is getting a huge reward. Nearly everyone knows of or has heard of Miley Cyrus because of her transformation and the exotic things that she does.

One opportunity that Miley Cyrus had, was being born into success. Already Miley’s family were famous. Her family was already well known and had money. Her father Billy Ray Cyrus was a famous country singer and songwriter. He is now more known for his acting, he acted in the Hannah Montana show with his daughter playing the role of her dad. Miley’s godmother Dolly Parton was also famous, she was a country music legend and an actress. Since Miley was surrounded by several different very successful singers, actors and actresses she learned from them and followed in their footsteps and became successful. When Miley started trying to earn a career with her talents her mother was there for her every step of the way. Mileys mom, Tish, was her co-manager and provided her with advice and helped her through all of the obstacles of becoming famous. Because Miley was raised in the family that she was it was an opportunity that not everyone is given, to become extremely successful.

The Matthew Effect is an advantage that happens to sports players and other organizations that have cut off dates. Miley Cyrus is not a sports player, she is a musician. There were no cut off dates during Miley working towards her success and fame. Miley is a very successful human being and has become richer over the years from her career. Miley is constantly doing things that are making her be known and to help her fame. Even though Miley is a very rich human being she does not keep it all to herself. Most of her money is put towards foundations and she donates a very large amount to several different charities.

Everyone thinks she is successful because she “twerks” and does crazy things for attention and on purpose to become famous. Reading through several articles on popsugar many people were offended by her style of dancing and lack of clothing that she wears. Several of them said the same thing; that she was doing everything that she did for fame. While many others were sticking up for her, Demi Lovato says "She's doing what she wants to do and this is her time to break out and figure out...I'm happy seeing her happy because I love her so much. And, you know, she doesn't care what people think, nor should she." Others around the world say that she is famous because of how open with herself she is with others. She makes her opinion known and she does whatever she wants, her doing this attracts people’s attention.

Being a caring person does not exactly make you an Outlier but in Miley Cyrus’s case I believe it does. Many people care about others and care about others feelings but not many of them do not do anything to help. Most people do not have enough power to make something widely known or have enough money to donate to foundations to make a difference. Miley Cyrus on the other hand does have that fame and have the money to make a difference in people’s lives and she does use it for the better good.

Miley Cyrus is a very loving and caring person, she has supported over 40 different charities and foundations. She donates large amounts of money to charity, she is considered one of the most charitable musicians. She has even started a foundation for the homeless youth, called the happy hippie foundation. She believes that she is the biggest feminist in the world because she tells women to not be scared of anything. She says “I'm for anybody and anything, I don't care what you want to do, what you want to look like." Her goal is for everyone to be themselves, and to love themselves as well. Miley herself is bisexual and she does not want to be defined as a gender or sexuality. She is also a huge supporter of LGBTQ rights and is highly against discrimination. Constantly Miley Cyrus is using her power and her fame to speak out for LGBTQ. All of these amazing things that Miley does to help people makes her an Outlier.
