Moral Issues Statements in 'A Doll's Douse' and 'The Great Gatsby'

Many controversies exist when it comes to matters to do with morality. The moral beliefs of individuals are all but different, and people have their understanding of what is right and what in various relationships that they form with their loved ones. From the ted talk given as a material for reference, the speaker highlights seven deadly sins of speaking that we all move from if at all, we want to make great speakers. In this paper, a particular focus on the relation between men and women is given and how their relationships are affected due to their inability to hail as depicted from the talk. Hail refers to a situation where we chose to be honest, authentic, practice integrity and show love to others.

The Great Gatsby is a book written by Scott Fitzgerald dedicated to different themes such as decadence, resistance to change, idealism, and also subscribing to the popular notions of the American dream. The idea of the author was to create a simple novel that highlighted the experiences of people during the Jazz age. The doll's house is a three-act play written by Henrik Ibsen. The book focuses explicitly on the role of women and their quest for self-realization. The themes in the two novels appeared strange to the societies of that time and only came to be realized later when the authors had passed away.

In a doll's house, things turned out not to be as they were presented from the very beginning. In the initial chapters of the book, the protagonist is presented as a woman who entirely depends on her husband, but later on, we realize that the woman made many sacrifices to her husband. In one of the instances, the woman had taken a loan to save his husband, and yet she had chosen not to tell him, she was paying the loan all by herself. However, when her action came into the limelight, they were termed as contrary to what the society expects. It was very wrong for any woman to take such actions behind the back of her husband. However, if we chose to consider her actions from the moral pint of view, we can establish that the woman was just but a responsible individual who can take actions that can better her life and the lives of people around her.

In The Great Gatsby, the book appears to treat the readers with the usual stories of a man and a woman, but in reality, the central message of the book is based on the disintegration of the American dream in an era of unprecedented prosperity. By reading the book, the readers can deceive the empty social and moral values of the 1920s. At that age, people were mainly interested in looking for pleasures and wealth. Through the glow of crazy jazz music and scandalous wealth, America's vision is made unrealistic and wasteful. Another common feature of the books is the way the messages are presented. They are not done from the very beginning but rather the main message is hidden in the narration and the character's attitudes, opinions, and actions.

Money is essential and it plays different roles in our lives. This fact is addressed widely in both the Dolls house and The Great Gatsby. In the writings, the ability to have and control the money is tied to the issue of morality. In the 19t century, several economic changes took place; there was the emergency of urban communities and enterprises. People were slowly shifting from traditional economic activities such as farming and moving to towns to control business enterprises. The people who had the money controlled the society, and thus the people like the lawyers and the bankers controlled the money. Torvald, one of the characters in the Dolls house, belonged to a group of people with money. He had absolute control over his life and the life of the people beside him, including his woman. Money provides a means which Torvalds shows the dominance of his wife. The position of Nora in a Doll's house is also dependent on money and how often she speculates to get control over her life and that of the husband.

In The Great Gatsby, money is depicted as the ultimate tool through which one can get whatever that he or she wants. After world war two, there was a bit of social disruption, and out of nowhere, almost everyone from different backgrounds started to make a fortune. The aristocratic families in American society were opposed to this. The author of the great Gatsby employs the characters to depict trends that shaped American society after the world war. There is a big class between the old money and the new money. Despite the changes and the new normal, the tastes and the traditions of the aristocracy are depicted in the book like, for example, the Buchanan's prefer to move to a new house to avoid the funeral of Gatsby.

The issues of morality and ethics are profoundly explored in both the two books. The writers are forced to make their choices based on their moral beliefs but surprisingly the choices that they do ends up not to resonate with the immediate surrounding and thereby inflicts negative consequences to them. The theme of morality is also compared to the role of the individual in society and the influence that society has on the individual in regards to the judgments and the attitudes. The outstanding character created by the author plays an outstanding role in driving the message home. The outstanding feature about these characters is that they can maintain their character, their beliefs and personality regardless of the external pressures. This is the fundamental unifying theme between the two books. There are also other important themes such as the role of women in self-realization in the book the doll house. The breaking of the stereotype related to the American dream is also extensively highlighted in the book The Great Gatsby.

Quite often we have found ourselves talking and yet people are reluctant to listen. The speaker offers several valuable voice lessons and gives suggestions about how to speak empathically. The author talks of the seven deadly sins of speaking. Gossiping, judging, negativity, complaining, excuses, exaggeration, lying and dogmatism are some of the things that can affect us from the talk and wanting the people to listen. The author suggests four cornerstones that can make us powerful in our speech. The first thing requires us to be honest in our talking or be honesty. The second thing entails being authentic or being ourselves. Integrity and love are the last pillars. We need to honor our word with the people we are talking with well.
