Having my own two personal businesses at such a young age has definitely given me the privilege of being able to be financially very comfortable but also the practice of changing theory into action. Teaching children and preparing brides for the biggest day of their lives really has shown me how I can have such a positive impact on people’s future however it hasn’t fulfilled my ambitions. Having completed two extended courses in anatomy made me realize how I can form a lot of information into higher ideas. I want to be able to highlight narratives and help others achieve their own unique journeys as well as being able to actually solve problems effectively.
As a very ‘emotionally social’ person, I am devoted to justice, so learning more about the human body draws my attention to topics such as the brain and mental health and why as individuals we should understand more about how our bodies work. In my country originally where I’m from Afghanistan, our healthcare environments would make anybody petrified. Having shadowed doctors and nurses in Dawood Khan Hospital of Kabul, I have witnessed the professional empathy and honesty given to patients in their most delicate positions. I met a lot of people who needed specialized care that was expensive and often rare to find in the region. Either way, the staff prioritized the patients in every way possible due to the teamwork and communication they shared among each other.
Working at the hospital afforded me the opportunity to meet mentors who have made me thrive to contribute to the medical field. I have learned medical ethics, compassion, and technical knowledge during my placements that I believe will help me greatly in coping with the rigorous course in your establishment. Being a child of both parents who were orphans and comes from a significantly less fortunate background makes me appreciate my health more than anything. I also suffer from a neurological disorder and long-term health condition therefore as a qualified belly dancer, I can practice my fitness and relieve myself from my hard-working lifestyle. Three weeks spent in a GP surgery and observing the renal unit and radiography department in Stoke Mandeville Hospital has actually surprised me. Having spoken to patients on dialysis and fighting cancer has made me come to terms with the emotional fragility they carry alongside having such heavy treatment.
What stood out to me the most was a year 1 junior doctor who had admitted that there were many instances where she hadn’t managed to sleep due to the time she wanted to go through her patient observations. Her determination and respect were enough to show me that as well as the number of thoughts doctors put into producing a plan to combat illnesses, the considerations that are put in place highlight a lot of the understanding all doctors should carry. There have been moments where I have witnessed grueling hours which every doctor that I have observed has had to work through however the reward is exactly why we are moving forward with our lifestyles more and more each day.
