My English professor has made the biggest impact on me and others this semester. With helping me get through my transfer into the class and being a very helpful in class whenever I decided to raise my hand. I don’t like writing that much but I felt like I learned how to write just a little bit better still a long way to go. However, she’s one of those teachers that you try to find over and over throughout your college experience to help you with assignments even if you’re not with her anymore. Lastly, she seems like she cares about us and our growing as writers and adults and that’s why I feel Mrs. Polk has had a big impact on myself and others.
First off, I was initially not even supposed to be in this class but because of time’s conflicting I needed to switch. Even though it was past the deadline she still stuck with me and helped me make the change. She didn’t just throw me in with the wolves either she asked me where I was with my other class and if I was familiar with certain things just to make sure I had a good transition into her class. Even with the other students who have been with her since day one she always makes sure no one is left behind. That’s why I’m glad I made the change because I still keep in contact with peers from the other class, and It seems like there always lost. When Ms. Polk makes sure you are where you need to be and if you’re not she will get you there.
Being In Mrs. Polk’s class honestly, I feel like I’ve become slightly a better writer. Never knew too much about the writing pyramid and other writing tools to perfect my writing skills or just fix any paper that needs fixing. Officially learning the difference between revising and editing a paper. Also, the writing process doesn’t have to be so stressful I’ve never really liked writing or the process but in this class I look forward to writing stuff now. Not everything but writing just seems like it’s ten times easier since I’ve been In Mrs. Polk’s class.
When I say you would want Mrs. Polk or a teacher like Polk that’s what I mean. You would want someone who is not going to leave half of the class or you behind because you feel uncomfortable asking questions or saying anything period. She helps with just about everything she recalls what she taught from previous classes just in case it goes with that classes lesson plan and can help you relate the two. However, even if you are an unlucky person and end up with a different professor you could probably still go back to her and get actual help to benefit you with that assignment even though it’s not for her class. Mrs. Polk seems like one of those professors that you would just go to and keep a good report with all throughout college. For example, when you hear a junior talking about or telling you about how much they like a professor because they have helped with so much maybe even wrote a letter and got them an intern she seems like one of those professors.
Like I said before she also seems like she cares for the student’s process as growing writers as we turn into young adults. She might keep tabs on us if we don’t try to get into her comp.2 classes or any of her other classes. I like that a teacher who the students like likes the students. With that being said her energy and way of teaching is just going to make you want to come back for another semester, and how many students you know like teachers after they had them for a semester? Lastly Mrs. Polk just actually cares about us and our growing as writers and adults and that’s why I feel Mrs. Polk has had a big impact on myself and others.
As a writer I am not too talented. Strong at possibly nothing at least if I am I wouldn't be able to explain it. Maybe I could write a good sentence and mess it up with an add -on. Now I like to write because I’ve realized you can pour your heart into the paper, like put your two cents in without being judged or looked at funny for what you said or your views on a situation. Smart thinking has been good to me this semester and I plan to use smart thinking in future semesters and possibly future professors. There are plenty of challenges when It comes to sitting down and writing a paper or essay, but the best challenge is writers block. This semester in Mrs. Polk’s class has allowed me to get better at all these thing’s not fully yet but one class at a time.
Like I said in the intro writing is freedom and sometimes that freedom needs a comma or an apostrophe here and there or maybe the use of to instead of too. Sometimes that can be very frustrating, but educational and very helpful to the writing process. When writing something that may not sound as good to me will be fine and vice versa. Thinking a sentence needs just a little more instead of just letting it be plain can mess up a whole paragraph. During the year I’m sure this incident has happened to me a couple of times but I feel that with Mrs. Polk help getting over the bad habit is going to be gone soon.
Papers are nice to write whether it’s for a class or just because you want to get something off your chest. Back in the 90’s comedians would talk about the stuff that was going on in the world for ten minutes to an hour and let you know what’s going on while making you laugh. Now people are scared and they make anonymous blogs to say what they want to say. It’s helpful kind of but not exactly because research requires facts rather than a reading that grabs your attention and more colors and less pop up’s whatever the reason that article does not help you. Especially If it’s a great paper exposing something within the government, the police, or anything else unjust about this world we live in. With our president bringing out bigot’s left and right over the simplest things even a wrong tweet and your president has half the world at least what seems to be half of the world hate you I don’t blame them for wanting to stay hidden.
Being completely honest I’ve never heard of smart thinking until I got to Virginia State University. While they may seem bad and some wouldn’t believe it but better late than never right? Before I got to this composition class in my last class we were told we can use it but it’s not mandatory and when I got it back, I was happy to receive a low B on my first paper here at state. Of course, I felt I could do better and I tried it edited the paper and earned a high B, which Isn’t much better but I was happy with that. Smart thinking not only helps you with writing your paper but also tells you what you could do to make it better. With writing I feel like you can learn something new every day or even get reminded If even the smallest thing slips my mind they will make sure that It’s addressed and possibly tell you how you should fix or word something differently.
Everybody gets writers block, don’t they? Sadly, that answer yes and It’s very true for probably even your favorite acclaimed writer. Again, writers block does not necessarily mean you cannot write anything, it can come in different forms. For example, you could be writing up a storm on your paper and just stop. Or another example would be just writing and maybe your phone goes off or the smallest thing distracts you for two to five minutes and then your back and lost your train of thought for thirty minutes. For me the worst form is when a paper is only like one and a half or two pages and I can’t write anything and as soon as I get back in the right state of mind, and start flowing I end up having still much more to write but the papers already done. To me that’s the worst because you’re supposed to write everything that comes to your mind and It’s limiting, when you just knew you had something good to write.
Most professors don’t really care if one or two student’s ends up falling behind. Therefore, I switched to the class I’m in now because as you can probably tell writing really isn’t for me and there are probably some mistakes on this paper. I trust that with taking Mrs. Polk’s class going into my sophomore year will help me further learn and comprehend the writing process that is kind of confusing to me as of now. Later on, down the line in later classes I’ll eventually not master it but understand It enough to were Smart thinking won’t mark up a quarter of the page. Mrs. Polk’s class has taught me so much and brought back old stuff that I’ve forgotten from high school. All the knowledge retention has to help in some way with the composition class or work but I feel like I’m going to actually need this stuff after graduation.
