Many motivational quotes encourage us to overcome our fears and not let them control us. But in reality, conquering one's fear is easier said than done. As someone who has struggled with fear, I can attest to this fact.
My biggest fear, which I’ll be talking about in this 300-word essay, is of large water bodies. It includes the idea of being miles away from the shore, surrounded by sharks, whales, giant jellyfish, crabs, and other deep-sea creatures. I'm not sure when or how this fear developed, but it became very prominent during my teenage years.
Despite my fascination with the ocean and its inhabitants, my fear of it intensified as I learned more about its massive, unpredictable nature. Moving to Singapore was the first time I had to confront this fear head-on. Even walking on pathways beside the ocean terrified me.
With encouragement from friends, I gradually approached the water, convincing myself that stepping into it meant adapting to an alien environment. I started by just feeling the ocean's rhythms, eventually progressing to knee-deep and even chin-deep immersion. One day, I even attempted snorkeling for 15 minutes. At first, I was overwhelmed by my fears and cried uncontrollably. But as I fed the fish and observed the coral, I realized I was experiencing underwater life live, not through a recorded video or movie. It was a different world, quiet and beautiful in its own way.
I'm not completely over my fear, but I've made significant progress. I haven't yet swum in the ocean without support, but I know I'll get there eventually.
In conclusion, overcoming fear is easier said than done, but it's possible with perseverance and support. Facing one's fears can lead to growth and new experiences. While I'm not completely over my fear of the ocean, I'm proud of the progress I've made and excited to see where my journey takes me next.
