Law has always been one of the most fascinating subjects for me. The idea that it underpins and influences everything that occurs in society is truly remarkable. Law affects every single person in everything they do. It's a fundamental aspect in our ever changing society and essential in protecting rights, maintaining order, resolving disputes, modelling moral standards and keeping social justice. My love for law grew as a young teen when I read many crime and detective books. Even though they were just fiction that didn't detail the complexity of law clearly, I have been inspired to study law since. Collaborating my knowledge from Sociology, Politics and Psychology I can see the impact law has in society. Sociology dictates the way policies have impacted lives, such as the equal pay act and how it's increased the amount of women working which in turn has increased family diversity and equality within couples.
The compulsory education act has influenced each child's future ensuring that they are educated and able to get a good job. This has reduced the amount of youth crime committed as they no longer are jobless and bored. Psychology has taught me the importance of social influence and how studies into eye witness testimony and leading questions have improved investigation and questioning techniques. Politics has been the most influential subject in my eagerness to learn more about law. It has taught me how laws are created, how court cases are dealt with and how our government functions. It outlined the importance of civil rights and liberties and how these are protected by the government. I did work experience at a primary school where I overshadowed the teacher observing the way they worked in supporting children.
There were many challenges in my way when it came to working with the lower ability students, many who had learning difficulties. This experience showed me the importance of patience and understanding when working with different ages. It taught me that communication is key in the workplace, to be able to listen but also relay your own views across successfully. Each day at the school was different with new tasks and this quickly became something I looked forward to everyday. I am also a sociology ambassador for the AS students, meeting weekly and recapping AS content. It was a form of revision for me but also gave me time management skills as I had to take out my own time to teach other peers. I also completed The Bronze award for Duke of Edinburgh, which taught me excellent skills in regards to teamwork. It boosted up my confidence, as you needed to take the role as a leader to finish the expedition. This also gave me responsibility, as someone who my other team members could count on.
During the evenings for the past six years, I have been completing a degree in Islamic theology where I attend classes every week for three hours after school. The biggest skill it taught me was how to balance my work in a healthy manner. It also taught me how to deal with stress and pressure, as there were times where I had exams running in school but also in madrasah. Time management will be helpful in my course to juggle both exams and extracurricular activities. In high school, I worked with different organisations each term, raising money and creating awareness.
For example, we worked with a charity that helps abused partners in relationships and another that helped parents who had recently lost a child. As each organisation was different it helped me become more self-aware and compassionate towards others. i helped plan fundraisers in order to raise money. I was also a part of the Purple Hearts organisation created by my peers in college. We worked with a homeless shelter with which we raised money and bought gifts for the homeless shelter in Blackburn. Volunteering improved my communication skills and my ability to plan and prioritise my work projects. To conclude, I am a highly motivated student who has a drive to learn about the depth that the legal system holds. In particular, this degree will help to form the basis of my envisioned career. Having the knowledge that this degree will provide, will give me a greater understanding about the importance of law.
