What got me interested to be an educator in the first place was when I was in primary school. I remembered that I enjoyed observing teachers sharing their knowledge in front of a classroom. The passion grew stronger when I was given an opportunity to participate in teaching programs, that is ABCL in 2015. In this program, I am tutoring three students under chemistry and one under mathematics. This tutoring experience gave me a great satisfaction every time I helped a fellow friend understands a particular chapter. It was a great feeling. Moreover, it trained me to simplify complex explanation in various ways for a better understanding for both my students and myself.
Apart from that, the activity taught me to manage my time properly and to planned my schedule to meet up with my students and to have time for myself. It builds more confidence in me in talking, socializing and presenting my ideas and knowledge. In 2014, while waiting for my O level results, I had volunteered as an assistant teacher in Pre-School for three months. In 2017, I had done a three-week attachment in sixth form centre by observing chemistry lectures. The experience taught me different methods in managing classroom, delivering of points/knowledge to students at different ages. Moreover, I was exposed to different class activity to achieve better understanding for students in class such as role-play, presentation, discussion and etc. I was also given an opportunity to teach a chemistry topic for two lower six class. It was a struggle at first due to nervousness but as the lecture goes on, it felt better and at the end of the day, it felt very rewarding. Teaching them and helping them understands the points delivered were very satisfying and I enjoyed it so much. Thus, I realized that I am passionate to pursue my career as a teacher and thus, I intend to apply for Master of Teaching at UBD.
Besides academic achievements, I had participated in the ping pong tournament in 2014. It was a good opportunity to joined the competition as it builds confidence in me, it teaches teamwork since it was a double game and in striving to be the best. This is somehow related to my course as it helps me in coping up with stress and in giving full commitment. Moreover, it results a healthy body condition leading to a better thinking skills.
Other way for me in coping up with any stress, I would jog around my house or I would go to the sport complex to jog or play badminton or ping pong. Sometimes I would play roller blade around my house. So, I exercise to release tension. During my time as an undergraduate, I not only focused on my studies but I also participate in other activities outside class. I had been holding a position as a secretary/treasurer for Bruneian society in University College London known as BRUCL society, as well as a secretary for Bruneian Society in Brunei Hall in the coming year. I had been a committee in conducting events such as Lost in London, Brunei Night Stage Performance, National Day, Junjung Ziarah and etc. Moreover, I had joined a three-day Islamic Camp known as Kem Ibadah and Mental Health Workshop.
This shows that I will not only contribute most of my time in studying but also participate in extra-curriculum activities to widens/broadens the scope of my knowledge and gain more other experiences and opportunities offered by University Brunei Darussalam. After completing Master of teaching, I intend to apply for a job as a chemistry teacher at any school in Brunei and at any level of education. With this degree, I will work hard to help the young generation to achieve the country 2035 vision that is preparing a well-educated and highly skilled youth. I believe that my academic ability and dedication to my subject and future career make me an ideal candidate to be given the scholarship to study master of teaching at University Brunei Darussalam. I look forward to taking advantage of all the opportunities that will be open to me as a student, both in work and leisure time.
