The hypothetical scenarios presented in Economics allow me to fully express myself. I enjoy questioning different aspects of the economy and understanding how each can have an impact. I particularly enjoy studying Economics at the A level, especially exploring markets, externalities, and government policies. My interest in Economics has expanded beyond college, leading me to enter the Royal Economics Society essay competition to further develop my analytical skills. Studying Economics has provided me with valuable insights into the finance industry. I became interested in how the Bank of England determines a fixed interest rate—currently at 0.75%—and its effects on loans, overdrafts, and mortgage interest payments in the economy. Finance is a subject that will allow me to develop my quantitative problem-solving skills, complementing my creative approach to provide solutions and ideas more efficiently in the future.
Accounting allows me to focus on my quantitative skills through the need to process numerical data and use critical thinking to interpret information. This foundational knowledge is crucial for my desired course, as it enables me to understand more complex concepts. Time management skills are essential in Accounting, and my focus has increased throughout college, particularly through the need to complete tests under pressure and complete work during lessons. I have participated in out-of-college events in Accounting, such as attending a KPMG insight day, where I received valuable feedback on improving my performance in presentations and written work. I also had the opportunity to meet senior members to discuss their career progression within the firm. This experience was invaluable, making me aware of the constant adaptation required to meet expectations, which will be beneficial in my course as I try different approaches in presentations or lessons to maximize my chances of success.
The interactive environment in Economics has been vital in developing my ability to share and debate my thoughts with others. As my confidence has grown, I feel more capable of expressing my ideas effectively through discussions. My adaptability has significantly improved due to Economics. For example, I can modify diagrams to suit my needs, allowing me to select the most relevant information depending on the specific question. Additionally, Economics has enabled me to devise solutions to problems, such as using government policies to address negative externalities. Further reading into the subject has shaped my understanding of Economics; books like ‘The Undercover Economist’ have made me realize how the fundamental problem of scarcity can have a severe multiplier effect on the economy.
Working in teams for Psychology projects has enhanced my teamwork skills, enabling me to switch roles within a group to ensure productivity and support my team in necessary situations. Furthermore, my organizational skills have grown, as each topic requires separate notes to be made individually each week. This ensures that independent study at home is completed to the highest standard, facilitating easier revision. Psychology has contributed to my reasoning skills as I apply logic and understanding to scenarios, using my knowledge to explain questions.
Outside of college, I am a determined football player, participating in competitive 5-a-side football weekly. Our 5-a-side matches heavily emphasize team play, requiring effective communication to create space through passing and strategic plays. These qualities will be useful in university, where the environment is demanding, allowing me to relieve pressure by collaborating with others in groups. I plan to join a football team at university to maintain my mental and physical fitness and form new friendships.
I hope I have demonstrated why I am well-suited for this degree. I am eager to begin my studies, as I feel it is predestined that I would progress along this path since choosing my A levels.
