The hypothetical scenarios presented in Economics allows me to fully express myself. I like being able to question different aspects of the economy and how each one can have an impact. I predominantly enjoy studying Economics at A level especially looking at markets, externalities and government policies. My interest in Economics has expanded beyond college and I have entered the Royal Economics Society essay competition to develop my analytical skills. Studying Economics has allowed me to gain insight into the finance industry. I took an interest in how the Bank of England agrees upon a fixed interest rate – at 0.75% currently - and the effects this can have upon loans, overdrafts and mortgage interest payments in the economy. Finance is a subject that would allow me to develop my quantitative problem-solving to present alongside my creative approach to provide solutions and ideas more efficiently in the future.
Accounting allows me to focus upon my quantitative skills through the need to process numerical data and use critical thinking to interpret the information. This would be useful in my desired course as it gives me a foundation to build upon and enables the understanding of further difficult concepts. Time management abilities are essential in Accounting and my focus has increased throughout the duration of college specifically through the need to complete tests in pressured situations as well as complete work during lessons. I have participated in an out of college event in Accounting by attending a KPMG insight day where I gained valuable feedback on how to improve my performance in presentations and written work as well as being able to meet senior members to discuss how they progressed through the firm. This experience benefitted me considerably as I became aware of the consistent adapting that is required to meet expectations which would help me in this course as I would try different approaches in presentations or lessons to maximise my chances of success.
The interactive environment in Economics has been vital in my development of being able to share and debate my thoughts with others. As my confidence has progressed, I feel I am able to express my ideas in a more effective manner through discussions. My ability to adapt is much improved due to Economics. For example, diagrams can be altered to my own liking so I can choose which information I should use depending on the specific question. In addition, Economics has allowed me to develop solutions to problems such as using government policies to develop solutions to negative externalities. Further reading into the subject has shaped my view on Economics, books such as ‘The Undercover Economist’ made me realise how the fundamental problem of scarcity can have a severe multiplier effect on the economy.
Working in teams in Psychology for projects has boosted my teamwork skills and enabled me to be able to switch between roles within a group to ensure that I can be fully productive and help my team in necessary situations. Furthermore, my organisational skills have grown as each topic has to be separated and notes must be made individually each week. This ensures independent study done at home is done to the highest standard to allow for easier revision. Psychology has contributed to my reasoning skills as I apply logic and understanding to scenarios and use my knowledge to explain the question.
Out of college, I am a determined football player. Each week, I play 5-a-side football competitively. Our 5-a-side football heavily surrounds team play as spaces are a lot tighter so passing the ball is required to try to open up the opposition. As a result, as a team we effectively communicate across the pitch to help each other create the space through runs or holding the ball up. These qualities can be useful in university where the environment is demanding so I can relieve pressure by working with others in groups. I plan to join a football team in university to keep myself mentally and physically fit and form new friendship groups.
I hope I have proven why I can do this degree. I am eager to start studying as I feel it is predestined that I was going to progress to this route since choosing my A levels.
