Nursing is a vocation to caring, supporting, feeling and touching people’s lives. It is a significant way of helping and giving future hope to people. It is a sacrificing profession but always rewarding. It touches every aspect of human life like emotional, spiritual, physical, psychological, moral etc.
My aspiration to be a nurse never started today. It has been the dream of my life, which I believe is coming to an actualization. I not only want to be a nurse but a committed adult nurse because it is a career which is highly flexible and can give me the opportunity to make a difference. As a young girl, I have watched my mother cared for my father with enthusiasm and passion when he was sick. She inculcated this caring attitude in me and encouraged me to always care for anyone regardless of color, race or religion.
Nursing is a challenging profession which requires good communicative, academic, practical etc. skills. I am convinced that assisting and caring for people are in my nature which I have demonstrated in several accident occasions I have witnessed, making sure that the victims were given a first aid and conveyed to the hospital.
I have worked as a carer at St. Georges Nursing Home Pimlico London for 14 months. It was a good experience which offered me an opportunity to work closely with the elderly people thereby putting into practice my skills. While working there, I was able to keep good records of my day to day activities, relate well with everyone, make care plans for the service users, keep confidentiality, give advice and respond to any questions accurately, keep to my job description and handle issues maturely without discrimination. I also learnt how to change night bags, feed the patients, dress their beds, bath or shower them and change the position of those who were bed ridden to avoid sores. I was able to use the hoist properly and maintained disease control etiquette which I learnt from the training I had. I had the opportunity of assisting people in the end of life stage and supported those with dementia and disability with personal care.
Even though this experience was demanding and challenging. For example, there was an occasion when a service user grabbed my hand and twisted it, though it was painful and embarrassing, but it never diminished my desire for becoming a nurse, either it increased it, which I believed was a way of preparing me for the future. I still longed to make a difference in their lives. My commitment to duty and passion to support the service users, impressed the matron that she advised and encouraged me never to leave nursing.
As a pastoral worker in a parish, I am exposed to visiting the elderly in their homes, giving them moral and spiritual support, running errands for them if need be, listening to them with patience and cheerfulness. I am also working with young people and children by preparing them for baptism and other sacraments thereby learning and exploring new skills like observation, communication, commitment to duty, readiness to accept responsibility and bringing new ideas.
I have the conviction that I am suitable for the course because I have every requirement needed to enrol on it. I have got my pass in Functional Skill Level 2 English and Grade 4 (C) in GCSE Mathematics. I have earlier done NVC level 3 on Health and Social Care. I am currently doing GCSE in English and Access to Health study which I believe will give me more understanding and knowledge of Psychology, Anatomy and Physiology which explores how the human body works.
I am a hardworking and ambitious person who can work effectively under pressure because nursing can sometimes be stressful especially when there is a workload.
With these skills and work experiences, I am confident that I can pursue a degree in Adult Nursing and come out as a qualified registered nurse who is well equipped to help the society. I will be so happy to achieve my dream purpose of caring and saving lives.
