Since I was a child I’ve always been enthusiastic about business; I sold homemade sandwiches and fruit juice to my neighbours and I volunteered to count the church offering at my Sunday school class. This came as a surprise to the rest of my family because they were more interested in medicine and sciences. As I got older I got a more vivid view of what I was passionate about, I wanted to be a solution provider in the business world, that is, help businesses, both small and established, to reach their ultimate goals.
My undergraduate education helped shape up my understanding of business and entrepreneurship and also my career goals and aspirations. In studying Economics, I got to learn about small-scale businesses and human behaviour towards products and services. I also acquired entrepreneurial skills such as bead making, photography, graphic design, and public speaking. This helped me a lot when I started a small clothing business in my 3rd year of school; I was able to communicate effectively with people and expand my network. I was also involved in setting up the Wennovation conference at school every semester. This conference encouraged creative students with entrepreneurial skills and ideas to pursue what they’re passionate about. Right after school, I worked at a technology start-up company as an administrative intern. I learned a lot about business plans, pitching to investors and writing a formal proposal.
Currently, as a Business and strategy analyst at Rescue Technologies Limited (RTL), a technology company that provides individuals with access to medical and security emergency response services, I have gained knowledge in several aspects of the business. I developed business processes and standard operating procedures; I was involved with the market research which included customer survey and business intelligence; I developed business proposals for potential clients in different sectors such as banks, schools, travel agencies, insurance companies, and housing estates; I assisted in tracking the key performance indicators of the different departments and an overall performance of the company on a monthly basis. I was also involved in a few HR and admin duties such as filing, recruitment and employee welfare. Working at RTL has been a huge game changer for me, it has opened my eyes to how business functions and the passion, drive and hard work it takes to accomplish the business goals and objectives. I aspire to undergo a masters program in Business, Entrepreneurship, and Technology at the University of Waterloo Conrad School of Business and Entrepreneurship to further increase my knowledge of business and all that it entails to successfully run a company.
Also, I plan to learn how to successfully convert a dream or talent to a commercial enterprise. I have always been passionate about business and with the related knowledge and skills I have acquired in the past, I believe I can contribute significantly to the program. My overall career goal is to become a management consultant, focusing on small-scale businesses and start-up companies. I chose these sectors because they are the critical stages in any business and once the business has a firm foundation, just like a building, it has a higher chance of succeeding and lasting longer in the market. I aim to provide the right strategies, innovations, and solutions to improve the organisation's performance and to enable reach their goals.
