It is so easy to get caught up with the everyday facets of life and neglect to take a minute to self-reflect on the much bigger picture of life. It is something I never thought I needed as a freshman, and it helped me with slowing down and taking a day aside off to acknowledge that what I am going through at this very moment in my life is and will always be significant in making a better sense of myself, of who I want to perceive myself to be, and how I will show myself to the world. My personal experience with God has taught me the importance of self-reflection and seeking a deeper understanding of my emotions, strengths, shortcomings, and the like. It is when I got to recognize significant parts of myself, thus becoming better ready to conform to changing conditions and circumstances of life, not only as a student but as a person in society.
When I stepped into college, I realized that my life has become a cycle, wherein I attempt to maximize my productivity and minimize the time I spent. At the point when I am continually preoccupied moving with one thing, then onto the next, I sometimes neglect to stop and ask myself “kumusta ka na?”. Setting aside the effort to think allows me to have a clear understanding of the values I deem the most significant, putting them at the forefront of my mind and my decisions. Moreover, as I experience new emotions and find greater meaning in God's promises, I found an ever-increasing desire to reflect to God.
In the Bible, John 8:12 says, “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” The message is telling me that every day we are faced with stressful circumstances, whether they be with academics, or with our relationships with our family and the people we meet as we go about our day by day tasks.
Given these inevitable circumstances, we can either rush to respond negatively or take our problems through God's eyes with love, faith, and most importantly with hope. It is anything but difficult to show God's goodness when we are in a positive disposition. By drawing near God and discovering love and understanding in every circumstance, we face, we can reflect God and shine His light to others, as His light is shone onto us.
Overall, the purpose behind the recollection is not just about knowing oneself, but also, for seeking and improving our relationship with God. The act of taking part in the process of self reflection and assessment in the standard of God sets a valuable undertaking. God ought us the need not to drive us to change, but we should effectively seek progress. Our relationship with Christ and of the Holy Spirit is the establishment by which our relationship with God can start to mend.
