Attending an NHS taster day sparked an interest in medicine for me, as I was given the opportunity to experience how a keyhole surgery would be carried out and how a scrub nurse would prepare for surgery. Due to my mums’ regular check-ups it permitted me to observe doctors and realise that medicine consists of more than just examining, diagnosing and treating the human body, but allowed me to realise the importance of emphasis and understanding your patient.
Completing my work experience with CFH solution, a graphic design company, allowed me to become more independent. This skill was shown as a result of making my own website where I was able to showcase my artwork. This project resulted in me making my own decisions without always depending on others and working towards a deadline whereby I had to work under pressure. Doctors work under pressure and take responsibility. I have displayed these characteristics through my role as a Senior Prefect and Student Ambassador in high school and college. I ensured all tasks were completed to an excellent standard and that the events ran smoothly, e. g. open evening and parents' evening.
I am a dedicated student and enjoy helping people thus participating in charity events. Being a member of the Charity Committee has improved my confidence through presenting my ideas along with my organisation skills as I was able to help organise events such as a talent show. I participated in an event named YPI where I represented the charity, Pendle Side Hospice. My aim was to spread awareness of the charity and raise money which our group accomplished. In this event, I demonstrated my leadership skills as I coordinated my team to achieve our goal. In addition, working with students from Tor View allowed me to spend time with disabled children and lead activities such as arts and crafts, improving my communication and planning skills besides being alert at all times. An example would be that with one of the students I would have to engage with them in an enthusiastic way, whereas with another student I would have to be calm and patient, for me to understand them and for them to trust me. This responsible role has allowed me to witness the difficulties that they possess and the enthusiasm they have in achieving their goals. It made me appreciate their hard work, patience and positivity, raising my awareness of the importance of sensitive and responsive communication.
I have completed the Bronze DofE award and NCS, the Challenge, which developed my team working and leadership skills. It allowed me to work with people from diverse backgrounds through various activities. We raised awareness on stereotypical behaviour and how we shouldn't let one's first impression allow us to treat a person, this is something I believe is vital for a doctor’s mindset. Here I displayed my creativity through making banners and posters to convey our message. I represented my community by being a long-term Volunteer Police Cadet which enabled me to become more responsible and confident and allowed me to improve my community. The volunteering consisted of raising money for charities such has Hayley's Hugs, delivering leaflets regarding health and safety and cleaning a neighbourhood park. I also represented my school by being part of the netball and rounder's team whereby I took part in tournaments. It developed my team working skills and emphasised the importance of adapting to different situations and helping each other. These skills are needed by a doctor in order to improve the health of patients by being able to effectively communicate with other healthcare professionals as well as being able to adapt to a variety of situations.
I know that a career in medicine will be full of challenges, challenging me physically and mentally but also very rewarding, where you’re constantly helping others and learning. I am determined be part of this and will strive to work the best I can and hopefully make a difference to many lives.
