Napoleon Bonaparte was born in Ajaccio, on the Mediterranean island of Corsica, on August 15, 1769. His family was not wealthy. Napoleon studied for five years at the military college of Brienne. He stood about 5 feet and 7 inches tall.
Rise to Power
In 1785, Bonaparte was commissioned a second lieutenant in La Fère artillery regiment. Napoleon saved the government from counter-revolutionary forces in 1975. Soon, he was named commander of the Army of the Interior. In 1798, he attempted to conquer Egypt but was defeated by the British under Horatio Nelson in the Battle of the Nile. As result of the Coup of 18–19 Brumaire, in 1799, he installed a military dictatorship, with himself as First Consul.
Napoleonic Wars
The Napoleonic Wars were a series of wars with various coalitions of European nations lasting from 1803 to 1815. With a purpose to raise money for future wars, in 1803, Napoleon sold France’s Louisiana Territory in North America to the United States for $15 million. During these years, empire continued to expand across much of western and central continental Europe. In 1812, Napoleon's invasion of Russia turned into the beginning of the end for Napoleon.
Hundred Days Campaign
In 1815 Napoleon returned to France to reestablish himself as emperor for the Hundred Days. The same year, Napoleon raised a new army and invaded Belgium, where British and Prussian troops were stationed. On June 18, at the Battle of Waterloo near Brussels, the Napoleon was defeated by the British, reinforced by Prussian fighters.
Legacy
Napoleon did end lawlessness and disorder in post-Revolutionary France. He loaded French museums with art stolen from across Europe.
Death
In October 1815, Napoleon was exiled to the island of Saint Helena, in the South Atlantic Ocean. He died there on May 5, 1821, at age 51.
