Going to school is obligatory and, most importantly, taking advantage of every opportunity that was given to me in high school through which I believe will prepare me for college is one of the biggest preparations for me. In order to prepare myself, I was encouraged to take English Gate as a sophomore, English Honor as a junior, and AP English Language as a senior. These class challenges me as a student to gain more knowledge and skills through reading and writing. Since English is one of the basic languages that is being used daily in our society and is a very underlying element in life based on how it is utilized regularly through the world to relay messages of the bigger conversation from people all around us. However, this can be quite a difficult task to obtain if you do not take chances of them when they’re given out to you freely in high school.
Reading and writing is like a foundation of knowledge that every individual person needs to obtain in order to be successful in their youths and throughout their life. It is the most valuable aspect of education and everywhere you go. Especially, if you are trying to achieve many of your goals. It will allow you to start with the very basic steps of trying to read and write by understanding the qualifications of how to become a professional one. In which you will need to obtain a lot of the basic skills that requires you to do so.
That is why it is important for every high school student who is preparing for college to start from the beginning of these challenges toward the end that will be resulting to the next level of school which is college. For example, in English Gate I learned to differentiate between the author’s attitude and message through his or her tone of the dialect or literature that is being represented. Due to the fact that each of their work contains many different use of grammar and punctuation. It is very important that you look closely to what the authors are saying in order to use it in your own words that will help you get through its finish work. And also by doing this, you might come across questions like “what is the author’s argument? What is he or she trying to say?’’. In order to get past the stages of becoming a great reader and often to get you started with writing. In this narrative essay I will talk about my personal experience.
While in English Honor, I was taught how to read from the book and summarize what the message or settings the author has for his audience by writing it out physically on a piece of paper after visualizing it in my head creating an illusion. For a sample, “to understand difficult passages of this kind, you need to translate them into your own words-to build a bridge, in effect, between the passage’s unfamiliar terms and one’s more familiar to you”. By building your own connection to this, it will help you get closer to the author and stay true to what the message is through this work of literacy.
As for my English Language class, I was taught how to find and describe the rhetorical strategies that the author uses in his or her writings because it will show a great understanding of why they chose these elements in the first place to be written in their work piece. It also provides a great amount of knowledge and skills through which the author puts effort in when he or she is writing this towards their audience that sets off the tone and attitudes that they want to be sent out to. Then make your own argument of why you think the author chose this kind of work. For example, “when developing your own arguments - the “I say” - you will often start by assessing the interpretations of other scientists’’. In order to bring out the right and correct forms of argument you must have reasonable evidence and details that you took from the passage that you are working on. Which helps me prepare a lot when it comes to reading an argumentative prompt and having to respond to it in an argumentative essay that contains many of the different aspects and rhetorical elements in these kind of work piece. Although, it may seem like an easy task but you will also have to keep in mind that “after summarizing the ideas you are responding to at the outset, it’s very important to continue to keep those ideas in view. Readers won’t be able to follow your unfolding response, much less any complications you may offer, unless you keep reminding them what claims you are responding to”.
Therefore, these abilities to read and write have played an extraordinary role in my life since I am ready to hold the learning of what has been going on in this world with literature and people’s attitude through writing just like I have the option to communicate through words. Which made me feel very passionate about reading and writing in high school and may also be a great start to gain some more personal experience in college. Where I will hope that by the end of college, I will become a great reader and writer who has the skills and strategies to teach the younger generations or youths that is also trying to prepare themselves into becoming successful.
