This narrative essay is about my journey in the world of art. I always had enjoyed art and still have involved in art throughout my whole life. The first time I came across with art was when I was five. With random colours and brush, I created an artwork with whatever I fill like to do. My mother thought I have talent in art, so she first introduced me to the world of art. I loved to express my emotions with different colours and sketch the stuff on the paper. However, the first time I learned art was for preparing art middle school. I was only 12 years old age, but, every day I was in the academic art school for 14 hours. I improved lots of skills, and no one was able even to imitate my portfolio. Though I had a high technique of art, it was very stressful for me. I always learned the same things for every day, and I supposed to finish one portfolio in four hours. If I did not finish on time, the teachers shouted at me and even ripped my portfolio. I got lots of stress, and this made me think art is not for me.
After had the art middle school entrance test, I got accepted in top five art middle school in Korea. However, I decided to make a change because I was confused shall I keep learning an art or not. I realised that if I am staying in this area, I would not be able to enjoy art. So, in 13 age, I moved the country to Singapore and started to get different systems of education. It was more freedom, and by having three years interruption in art, I finally learned I still loved to do art but without forcing by someone.
After my freshman year, I started to take art more seriously because I was for sure art is the something that I might like to pursue as for my career. When I was in the Art Junior class, the goal was to have an AP Art class during my junior year. So, I asked my instructor, and she thought I have strong ability to joined with Pre-AP Art classes because I had a strong talented in art. I was practising art skills since my sophomore year, and I took an AP- Studio Drawing Art and challenged my junior year. I loved to create my artwork, but, creating 24 pieces in 9 months was a tough challenge for me. However, unlike previous years ago, I always enjoyed art though it was very challenging for me. I always stayed in the art room after school and practice every day. Furthermore, I got a five on the AP – Studio Drawing Art and these results show my immense efforts.
While I was taking AP Art, I always make high quality of the artwork, but all of the portfolios’ styles were similar. So, my art instructor warned me that I would need to dedicate most of my time and effort to take the risk on each of the portfolios. While some might have felt frustration, I thoroughly enjoyed the process. Creating different types of artwork of freedom and made my ability to express my ideas. Art made me into a person who can bring out messages to everyone through drawings.
Taking AP Art Studio during my junior year was the childhood memories and drove me back to my growing interest in the arts. I suddenly remembered the childhood days that I slashed the paints on to everywhere and expressed my emotions. At that moment, I return to the art studio and expand my artistic techniques. After I finished AP Art and already had 24 pieces of my artwork, I wanted to create more portfolios and express my emotions in the artwork. So, during my summer holiday, every day I was in the art studio and created my portfolios. While I was working my portfolios, there was a ”Young Artist Group Exhibition” which they choose for the top 20 students’ artwork and having an exhibition in the gallery. I tried even harder to work on my college portfolio at an art studio.
Because I had lots of chance to create and try on new materials for the portfolios, I found out that which areas is most fit into me. Although I do enjoy all areas of art, my present interest in art is more graphic and painting. For example, by taking Pre-AP Computer Design class, I have been designing graphics on my computers and have work published on the website. Not only design, I loved the differences in the colours, but I also enjoy and talented in using traditional mediums such as watercolour, oil paint, and acrylic paint. Studio Intensive Art is also the current course I am taking now, and it helped me branch out more. I have experimented in many disciplines, successfully producing pastels, colour pencil drawings, which I had never tried and fully developed before.
Throughout my whole high school year, I have been involved in several activities, and have also made an effort to maintain the balance between academic work and portfolios. Being involved in and having the ability to give something back during my high school year has always been important to me. To conclude this narrative essay, I can say art is my passion, and I keep looking forward to further developing my ability at foundation and degree level.
