In the turn of the century, internet has grown to become a vital tool in our daily life, acting as a medium for communication and discourse, as a facilitator of economic growth, or at times, a simple source of entertainment. Thanks to free internet that exists in status quo, each individual can easily understand what net neutrality is all about, by viewing AIB’s video , or by reading responses on Quora or even liking statuses on Facebook. Much like the air we breathe, the internet is public property for all and has remained neutral ground. While it may not be as essential for survival as the former, the sheer impact that it has on our daily lives makes it indispensable. The narrative that prevails today is that the internet is for all, and that nobody should be allowed to exercise preferential treatment on the internet.

In simplest terms, net neutrality is the principle by which the internet carrier is prohibited from discriminating between any two ‘packets’ of data carried over its network, no matter what the content, source or price.

The debate on ‘Net Neutrality’ originated in the United States of America, when the Federal Communications Council (FCC) had proposed to allow internet carriers to give preference on their network to select websites in exchange for a fee. John Oliver, on his famous talk-show, introduced the discussion on net neutrality by declaring that “The Internet is not broke, and the FCC is out to fix it.” The term ‘Net Neutrality’ was coined by an American academician, Tim Wu in the year 2003, when he said “the Internet inherently does not favour one application over others”. Net neutrality is a network design paradigm that argues for broadband network providers to be completely detached from what information is sent over their networks. In essence, it argues that no bit of information should be prioritized over another.

The innocuously titled net neutrality has been a bone of contention between government regulators, consumer groups and ISPs for over a decade in the US, and now the implications of the issue are reaching far beyond North America. While the overwhelming public interest garnered by net neutrality is hardly surprising, given the growing recognition of the significance of the Internet, there appears to be some degree of ambiguity regarding the implementation of the move, and the effects which would follow from this implementation.
