Many individuals say that the metal of a man is found in his capacity to keep his goals regardless of anything that life can toss at you. Expecting adoration and support from his folks, his mom verbally slaps him in the face. “I know what you want to do. I know you want to go away and be a soldier. Well you can go to hell. I’m just another stranger (Findley, 28).”

Chief Taffler additionally deceived Robert, despite the fact that he didn't notice it. Robert set him up as a good example to imitate amid the war, however once he discovered that he was a gay, Robert's goals of individuals he gazes upward to in war were pounded. “He picked up a boot and held it in his hand. He does this by burning her photos to expel her from this inhuman world. “Robert sat on the mutilated mattress and opened his kit bag… This was not an act of anger – but an act of charity. (Findley, 172)” This shows that even through hopelessness, Robert still manages to stick to his ideals.

Not long from that point forward, when Robert tries to free the horses from the burning barn he gets trapped in it. In the end they manage to free him with burns, although he still cares more for the sake of the animals over his own. “Robert was heard to say with great clarity: ‘The dog. The dog.’ And then he lost consciousness. (Findley, 185)” Put aside the fact that he almost faced death, and the result from freeing the horses, when he is offered an exit from life and pain, he declines to take it when it is offered by Marian Turner. “’I will help you if you want me to.’ He replied: ‘Not yet.’ (Findley, 190)”
