In Nursing, communication is crucial in that it facilitates the improvement of outcomes, fosters relationships, and helps in facilitating effective teamwork. When carrying out nursing activities, information is needed from the patient for the nurses to offer care that will lead to achieving the best outcomes. There is some information that patients might not be ready to release unless a nurse compels them to do so, such compelling exercise can not only be achieved through good communication and trust between the two parties (Kourkouta & Papathanasiou, 2014). When releasing the information and for the patient to be truthful, they must be assured that the information is in safe hands, and for this to happen, there is a need for the patient to have a trusted nurse (The Importance of Effective Communication in Nursing, 2022). This trust is realized through having good communication between the two parties.
Additionally, from what I have learned, communication in the nursing setting is beneficial to facilitating teamwork among nursing practitioners. Through communication between the nursing practitioners, they are able to make plans amongst themselves about how they intend to carry out their activities to achieve continuity of patient care services between different departments in which these nurses work. Additionally, in situations where the nurses are working on one patient, communication enables the division of labor amongst them, and each acquires information about the time that their services are needed and the role that they have to play as far as offering care to a specific patient is concerned (Kourkouta & Papathanasiou, 2014). Essentially, a nurse's team leader majorly depends on communication to create a good working structure among the nurses and they are aware prior to the start of the teamwork that their communication will be directed to the leader and it is from their leader that they will source information they need as far as the team exercise is concerned (Barton, Bruce, & Schreiber, 2018).
Further, I have learned in this course that through effective communication, nurses are able to create a good rapport and communication between them and the patients' families, friends, and other caregivers. This kind of communication is needed to achieve smooth continuity of care when the patient leaves the healthcare facility and is possibly subjected to homecare before they recover fully. Here, the nurse provides information on what is needed for there to be utmost care offered to the patient for quick recovery and elimination of any danger that may derail the recovery. On the other hand, the nurse may request any information they might want to have about the patient, especially when the patient is not in a position to provide some (The Importance of Effective Communication in Nursing, 2022).
