This essay in English is about my best friend. Friends are as important as relatives; we cannot live without them, and sometimes best friends can change our lives. My best friend, Steve, is one of the most important people in my life. We share our happiness, feelings, and problems with each other. He has actually transformed me into a better person.
Steve and I have been best friends for three years. We first met at a party; he was invited by my roommate to our apartment. Steve was very talkative at that party, and he asked for my contact information, becoming my Facebook friend that night. He loves giving thumbs up to others’ posts. Initially, I did not like Steve very much. He is handsome and spontaneously charming, and people all like him. This made me feel he was unreal and insincere. However, one event changed my mind.
One day, our friend Frank got into big trouble. He hit a parked car and ran without leaving any note because he thought he might get away with it. However, there was a camera in the parked car he hit, and he was hunted by police. As a result, Frank had to pay fines and costs filed by the other driver’s insurance company, including legal and investigative fees. Frank talked to us about his situation and asked if we could help raise some money to help him out. Some of my friends took out five-dollar or ten-dollar bills, and some disappeared for days. It was only Steve who came to Frank the next day after learning about Frank’s trouble. He took out his small cash safe; there were two packs of five-dollar bills aggregating five hundred dollars, and there were some tens and twenties, which he did not take the time to count and add. Steve told us he had saved the money for getting a new laptop, but he thought he could get his laptop later and hoped to help Frank out first. From that moment, I truly understood Steve, and I felt so bad about my prejudice against him initially. Thereafter, we spent lots of time together.
Steve has a great sense of humor; he always makes me laugh hard. On the other hand, Steve is more mature than me; sometimes, he acts like my parent. He teaches me a lot and gives me suggestions as my parent does. It really makes me feel warmer when we are together. Steve encouraged me in studying and supported me when I was down. I can tell him secrets that I don’t even share with my parents. Sometimes I acted immaturely and emotionally, yet he never abandoned me or let me down. Once, I asked him why he always had a good temper and was willing to help others. He told me a story about his childhood that I will never forget as long as I live.
Steve’s father is a drunkard and spent Steve’s college tuition on alcohol and gambling. Steve’s father even pushed him down the stairs when Steve was in fifth grade for making a minor mistake. In Steve’s entire growing-up life, whenever he attempted any kind of project or hobby, his father would destroy whatever it was that gave him joy. Instead of becoming like his father, Steve sees the importance of education and sets a future goal for himself. Steve told me that tolerance was something I should learn and keep in mind. I am still trying to be a tolerant person, inspired by his example.
I always feel so lucky to have a best friend like Steve. Even though we were apart since we went to college, I flew to Steve when my heart was broken, and he could always entertain me pure-heartedly. He accompanied me, comforted me, and tried his best to make me laugh. Amazingly, we always have similar interests; once I find something interesting, he is always the first person I want to share it with. When I feel down, he always helps me find the best solution. Steve is like a mentor to me, and thanks to Steve, there has never been any difficulty or hardship that I could not overcome in the past. I also believe that his influence is something I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
