Parallels to Today in 1984 by George Orwell

In 1984, O’Brien says, “Ours is founded upon hatred. In our world there will be no emotions except fear and rage”. That is something which is a parallel to today because our world now is based on hate and deception. A society can survive if it based on hate and deception.

A society based on hate and deception can survive In Fact, there are real world examples of organizations that prove the existence and possibilities of it being true. For example those like North Korea, the (KKK), the Nazi Party of Germany, and Al-Qaeda. Are all examples of people and organizations that are based on hate and deception.

The Al-Qaeda Terrorist Organization is very well known for their 9/11 attacks on the US. They are united by a hatred of the US because of America’s support of Israel, it’s involvement in the Persian Gulf War, and it’s military presence in the middle east. The German Nazi party of the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s rose to power with their use of mass persecution and direct hatred to a common enemey of essentially anyone who was not a white Christian. Adolf Hitler influenced people in the German population so much to the point that they were brainwashed into doing what he had planned, that was based on a hatred for Jews. The KKK began with a few confederate farmers who did not like the progressive laws that were being put in place in the United States to give African Americans more liberties. Their society is based on hate for dark-skinned people and African Americans. North Korea is perfect example of a modern society based on hate for the US. North Korea is currently the most isolated communist country in the world. North Korean children are specifically taught to hate against the Japanese and the U.S. These are all reasons why I believe a society based on hate and deception could survive.

What future does the society from 1984 have? The Society from 1984 doesn’t have a good future. However, it seems like it could survive. Everything is based on hatred because that is a side effect of fear and rage. The people that live in Oceania are in constant fear from the thought police. Also in today's world, they could be identified as the government. Same as the people in Oceania

These are some of the parallels that our society today has. Our society today has a lot of hate influenced by many organizations and people. Even though things like that have taken place, we are still thriving as a society. In Oceania a lot of the hate and deception had a big parallel. In 1984 the thought police took censorship to an extreme and Big Brother is always watching. A parallel from that to today, is how we have net neutrality. With net neutrality, the government has been using it as a way to prevent us from looking at certain things online. The same this is applied with the thought police they are prevented from thinking on their own, and also the NSA. The NSA also tracks and watches peoples emails, text messages, and even phone calls.

In conclusion, a society based on hate can survive, just like Oceania survived for many years. O'Brien is correct in saying that a hate-based society can survive, except that he forgot to mention that this society must meet one requirement. That requirement is that the community needs to be isolated. But Germany and the KKK do not meet that requirement so they aren’t actually just like Oceania. Oceania does meet that requirement because it is an isolated community.
