Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ was an extremely upsetting movie. It was a good movie but what may have happened is very heartbreaking. It is also probably the most violent movie I have ever seen. More than half of the movie was the pain and torture Jesus went through. Once the torture began I got lost on the title. The word passion threw me off. I thought to myself did Jesus enjoy this? Was suffering his passion? Later after reading Robert Ebert's review it made more sense. Robert Ebert clarifies that passion is usually mistaken for romance when actually it is the Latin word for pain. Later on the meaning of Christ love for mankind was added. Hence why, it was used. Then the title made sense, pain/suffering of the Christ. Throughout the movie Jesus does nothing but suffer. Whether it be physical pain, verbal pain, or mental pain. Not only does he suffer from hatred and torture but also suffer from betrayal. And I think that the worst type of pain there is.
It’s hard to choose a specific. The whole movie seemed like a very long non ending scene. But one thing that stood out to me the most which I understood but was mind blown by was Jesus asking for forgiveness for the people that make him go through such a tough time and later are the cause of his death. He asks god for forgiveness more than once in the movie. But, specifically I am talking about the scene when is he hanging on the cross and the leader on the clan comes up to him and starts badmouthing him. The leader critics him on how he be a Messiah and not even bring himself down from the cross. He also reminds Christ of how he said that he could destroy their temple and rebuild it in three days. He walks away from the cross almost giving him a challenge. At time that moment Jesus still, after all of this, prays to god for forgiveness towards the people that did this to him and also says that they do not know what they’re doing. This scene was important because even while hanging there on the cross unable to move he showed how great he was, how powerful he was. When he prayed everyone paused and probably just thought “wait a minute, what?” It was so mind blowing to me because when I see the world today people are ready to kill each over the littlest things and I wonder how can someone's heart be so big that they are willing to put his life on the line for his people without any hesitation. When he said that there were also some soldiers that looked like they did want to be a part of this but had no choice. Once everyone starts to leave there is a sudden change in weather. The clouds come and it gets darker. There is wind. The music gets louder. And then there is an earthquake. Not enough to cause the people themselves harm because of Jesus request to god but enough to fulfill the words of Jesus that the leader said he could not. At the end, Jesus was off the cross and the temple also crumbles down to pieces. At that point all the people involved in the death of Jesus realize what they have done and who really has the power above all.
In conclusions, this movie gave me a headache. Also, because of it having to do with religion it makes thing that bit more intense. What goes around comes around. This movie is a really good one if someone wants to really understand the story of Jesus. Before watching this movie I knew of the story but it was more like oh yeah he suffered and gave his life for his people. After watching it was more like oh my god tears rolling down the cheek wondering how people could be so cruel.
