According to my point of view, leadership is the quality of a person who leads a group of individuals enthusiastically and effectively. Setting up feasible objectives and providing information significant to accomplish those objectives. Leadership considers various attributes such as creative thinking, patience, excellent communication and management skills, wisely react in emergencies, self-confident, decision-making as well as an eagerness to face challenges.
In formal leadership, leaders are given authority depending upon the roles within a group. They are assigned to be leaders as a component of their job in the group. The leadership has an occupation to arrange and guide group members to meet the objectives of the organization or group (Vercillo, 2016). Liza works as an educator in nursing college. She speaks to them on different subjects, teaches rules and regulations as well as motivates how to accomplish their objectives in study.
The styles of informal leadership leaders are those who do not have the official power to coordinate the group. In spite of this, the group decides to follow the lead of those individuals. The informal leader may arise because they are attractive and friendly with the objective so that people want to listen to them and they show certain information and thoughts that appear to be valuable to the group (Vercillo, 2016). Maria works as a registered nurse in cardiac recovery. One day her shift incharge was absent. Due to this, she took the responsibility of unit and assisted new staff as a leader. She motivated all new staff members regarding how to fulfill their goals, communicate about the proposed circumstances at work and how to solve them, use innovative thinking while providing care to the patient. In this way, Maria shows informal leadership because she did not have the power to control group but she recognized her goal of a leader as she was an experienced and senior nurse.
Here I am talking about my personal leadership experience, during my job I worked as a shift-incharge in Cardiac recovery in one of the reputed hospitals in India. I was on 12- hour long night shift with my 2 colleagues and one patient who was undergoing bypass surgery. Suddenly, a 50- year old male collapsed. Unfortunately, Cardiac anaesthetic was not available and it was my duty to take over the entire circumstance. I noticed ECG (Electrocardiogram) changes on a patient monitor which indicated AF (Atrial fibrillation). I taught and motivated my associates handled this situation and instructed them to take ABG (Atrial blood gas) sample and it showed alterations. Quickly I prepared Cordarone infusion and administered it to the patient and instructed other staff members to give psychological support to client and fortunately, following one hour patient was stabled. In this way, I demonstrated formal leadership.
All organizations in nursing have their own guidelines and policies regarding leadership. Though, I have learnt some of them before, but my various concepts got clear after attending my college lectures and the knowledge I have been looking online on the websites of CNO, CNA, RANO and RPNAO. Earlier I thought leaders are only those persons who give command to group members to meet the goals of organization or group but after reading concepts of leadership my personal leadership philosophy influenced and I have learnt how leaders can build effective and productive teams to improve any organization’s performance. Leaders not only give command but also help others and work collaboratively with their associates for the betterment and advancement of the company. Before, I assumed that leadership has only one type and I was unknown about the types of leadership but after I came to know about the various types and styles of leaderships such as formal, informal, transformational and so on. Leadership is a significant part of these organizations. Leadership cannot be imagined and sustained without continuous and intensive support. Leadership is developed and reinforced with a combination of innate and educated skills.
A Philosophy of personal leadership is a set of beliefs, principles and strategies that you use to analyze and respond to knowledge. It helps everybody who listens to consider the beliefs, goals, decision-making strategies and what you expect from you and others (Dudley, 2018). According to my personal leadership philosophy, leadership is crucial from a student to an experienced nurse, in each nursing post and across all fields of practice. Leadership is a shared responsibility that can contribute to the development and creation of good nursing networks and relationships. I will do my best to try to build a strong network between nurses which contribute to high quality nursing practice, regardless of what I learned here through this course. Effective nurse leaders encourage the environment that increases their staff’s passion and enthusiasm for their job. With leadership, if one shares their thoughts, knowledge and skills with others then they can also learn their skills in that way. If in future I become a nurse leader, I will encourage other staff members to work as a team. As a nursing leader, I will support my teammates who might have a hard time and praise those who do outstanding jobs.
