Personal Reflection on Butler's Description of an Educated Man

To begin with, I agree with Butler's description of an educated man because an educated guy possesses all of the attributes he mentions. There are a lot of educated men on the planet, but there are also a lot of men who are not so educated. Nicholas Murray Butler listed five characteristics of an educated man in his essay “The Marks of an Educated Man”: correctness and precision in the mother tongue, gentle manners, power and habit of contemplation, power of growth, and his ability to work efficiently. In Butler's definition of an educated man, the definition of an educated man is correct. You can't say you've met a single educated man who doesn't have all five of the characteristics he's described above.

An educated man, they say, is a man who is intelligent, has everything, is good at everything, is always at the top of the class, and can have whatever he wants. However, there is a catch. Being an educated man to me does not confine himself to the printed pages of a book, but rather evaluates it in order to prove anything and being a man who is open-minded, developing his own knowledge, has skills and I agree with Butler's concept of an educated guy since he seems to have a more clear definition than everyone else's. An educated man has decent manners as his second trait, which he had stated. This is correct in my opinion, and many educated men have good manners. In other words, if a man has no manners and always has a vulgar attitude, he is not properly educated. An educated man is well disciplined, knows how to respect, has good relationship with the parents and other people, has precision in using mother tongue and what it means is that and educated man uses correct and proper pronunciation and language on what he is saying everyday. Butler also mentioned in a quote is if a man can speak English clearly and properly then he is considered educated, other people in today's generation can't even speak or use English language properly verbally and through text. Being an educated man who speak and pronounce his word clearly can be easily understand by others. An educated man knows how to read and understand a situation. This is a man who is willing to share his thoughts, opinions, and learnings with everyone who will listen. He is an unselfish man. A man who is willing to go to any lengths to protect what is right. Being an educated guy does not imply achieving perfection, but rather a man who will go to great lengths to improve things.

One of the most significant characteristics of an educated man, is possessing moral principles, and I agree with him. 'An educated man needs to know a little about everything and a lot about something,' which refers to having a field of expertise while also having a general understanding, is one of my favorite phrase in the text.
