'Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned'?

Born and raised in a village in India with less exposure to medical facilities and education has always attracted my focus to enter healthcare and pursue it as career. The path was never easy for me. Struggles began as a three-year-old kid (when I started school) with my two siblings who used to take a bus at 5 am to reach school at 8:00 am. Juggling between studies and lack of facilities always affected my studies. My grandfather died due to the absence of treatment. He was suffering from heart disease, but due to lack of medical facilities in the area, he was not given required treatment. That was the first time I felt helpless. Being a team member of our school basketball team had the opportunity to play in championships. The coach of the different team started feeling pain in this left arm. She took painkillers and kept her arm unchecked for certain days. One day at the match she fainted, and her heartbeat slowed down.

My friend’s father who is a physician was present there and helped the coach. I was allured by the service provided by him in the emergency situation. That even made my decision definite to enter the medical field. I have had the opportunity to work and volunteer in local medical clinics and with local communities. The first time I volunteered was when I was 17 and attended a medical camp in our village. Since then I have participated in many medical and dental camps. Every encounter with healthcare provider made my decision more definite to study medicine and treat people. In India I got the opportunity to enter dental school and due to financial and residential reasons I could not enter medical school. I worked with many patients and did dental procedures in school and in job for one and a half years. When I met my fiance in 2015, I discussed about my passion for medicine. He introduced me to the physician assistant role. With immerse research I was assured to start this career after coming to USA. Soon I started my job as a Medical Assistant in India as it was a job on training, so it was very beneficial for me. I learned a lot of new things and started doing minor medical procedures and assisting the doctor in other procedures.

When I came to United States in 2016, I shadowed a physician assistant in the hospital. This gave me the opportunity to interact with other PA’s and physicians. My admiration for PA profession grew stronger. They work autonomously and collaboratively with physicians. Their role in interacting with patients and in operation theatres gave me a direct insight about the PA. The shadowing experience truly made me clear the importance of PA in a heath care. I enrolled in a college to do my prerequisites and completed 44 credits in two semesters with 4.0 grade point average. I was top of my class in all subjects and teachers appreciated me. I received Presidential award from Fayetteville technical community college for my excellent work in academics. The PA school requires a lot of hard work and dedication. Excelling in my prerequisites made it clear for me that I can achieve this dedication in PA school as well.

Working as a medical assistant in a clinic in Fayetteville, North Carolina gave me an opportunity to interact more with patients and physicians. I have had the privilege of working with different types of patients from dental to medical in India and the United States. Working both as a dentist and medical assistant I have seen patients with different kinds of injuries, medical conditions and personalities. I have got the privilege to treat and interact with patients and physicians for many years which taught me that it requires a comprehensive approach to understand patient’s life and medical conditions. Due to working with different physicians and dentists I have always understood how the relationship of patient and provider affect the treatment. Over the last one and half years of working and shadowing PA’s in several settings gave me an insight of their intense role. Their ability to work collaboratively with physicians and other health care employees and their skills to develop a plan that works effectively for the patient. I believe these are the skills I can excel at. I have been a part of heath care from ten years now and my experiences have confirmed that this career is the right choice for me.

My Interest In A Career In Healthcare Field

There was never a big Eureka moment, and medicine is not something that I’ve wanted to do from a particularly young age. Instead, I think of medicine as a passion I grew into. In the past year, I have had to make many decisions concerning my desired career path, I have had to consider how I want to contribute to the world around me. It’s become clear to me that medicine is the career path for me, through it I will be able to satisfy my curiosity for science while still providing for my community in profound and meaningful ways

As a naturally inquisitive person, I have developed a profound interest in biological sciences and the human body, especially in the field of internal medicine. Losing two grandparents to complications with diabetes fueled my determination to find out more about the disease. It prompted me to carry out my own research through which I found out about the Jordanian diabetes crisis… As a Jordanian,, this epidemic was of great interest to me, for weeks I read about disease prevention, environmental risk factors and diet and I began to realize that The prevalence of diabetics in Jordan is largely due to the small population of doctors and healthcare providers, as well as the high costs of treatment which make treatment inaccessible to vulnerable populations. In most developed countries, type two diabetes has a much lower fatality rate than it does in Jordan. My research inspired my decision to pursue a career in healthcare, by becoming aware of the challenges that my community faces, I have come to see medicine is an opportunity for me to contribute to my community and help combat the health crisis that it faces.

I first became interested in medicine when I met Ahmad. I met Ahmad and his family while volunteering at the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan. Ahmad and his family had just recently relocated to Amman from Gaza in search of a better quality of life. When they got to Amman however, Ahmad’s father, a construction worker and the main provider for the family, got sick. He suffered multiple complications with his untreated type 2 diabetes which left him unable to work. The family was left with no choice but to pull their oldest son, sixteen year old Ahmad, out of school so that he can help provide for his family. This experience demonstrated to me the prominent role healthcare plays in people’s lives. If Ahmad’s family had any access to healthcare the quality of their lives may have been improved and maybe Ahmad wouldn’t have had to leave his education behind. I began to realize that medicine is not just hard science, and how I, as a physician, can help offer families like Ahmed’s a better quality of life.

Over the past few months, I have started to really think about the contributions I would like to make to the world. Experiences like the one I had at the zaatari refugee camp have revealed to me the huge impact of medicine on people’s lives. Medicine is an opportunity for me to utilize my interest in science to offer people a better standard of living. In many ways, I am doing this for the people in my community that do not have access to quality healthcare, for people like Ahmad, the victims off circumstance that could have had so much more but instead were limited by a system that failed to provide for them. The next years of my life that I will spend studying are n investment not only in myself, as human being, but also in the community that I plan to serve.
