What do I value the most? What makes me happy? What do I want to accomplish? These were some of the questions I struggled with for many years. After evaluating what I enjoyed the most, I decided to pursue the only thing that made me smile every time thought about it, nursing. Even though this means sacrificing family time and long nights, this is the only thing I can picture myself doing. Now, the real question is, what things am I willing to sacrifice to pursue what I love?
Before going deep into discussions in how I want to spend time in college and what matters to me, I would like to introduce myself. Since many of my friends find it difficult to pronounce my name, I prefer to be called. I was born and raised in. My main language is Spanish and my secondary language is English. I am the youngest child of three siblings. I have been happily married to for eight years. I immigrated to El Paso, Texas on after my husband enlisted in the US ARMY. Since the military gives soldiers orders to move to a new military base every three to four years, I have had the privileged to live in
Currently, I have one major goal, to graduate from nursing school. I have to admit that after reading “How to Live Wisely,” by Richard J. Light, I realized I had a lot to reflect on. In prompt number one asks to make a list of how I want to spend my time at college and what matters to me. For the next year, the most important goal I have is to be accepted in the nursing program. This is the most important goal I currently have because the same year I immigrated to El Paso, Texas I graduated from nursing school from. Unfortunately, since I wasn’t fluent in English, I decided to not practice in the states until I was sure I was fluent enough to communicate with my patients. This was one of the hardest decisions I ever made in my life. Now that I finally can communicate fluently in English I decided it was time for me to follow my dream. The only problem I am currently facing is that I need to spend my time more wisely. Since I’ve been given the opportunity to start college again, I have to stop wasting time in those things that are not important and put all my attention on the classes I am currently attending.
Even though I understand that the career I have chosen is a very demanding, I am committed to finish the only thing I know I enjoy. After all, anything I chose to accomplish in life will take a lot of my time, hard work, and personal sacrifice.
