My home is me and I am my home. I am a mirror of where I came from and my foundations. As my home carried me every day and night, I have carried it inside me for my entire life.
Two years ago my family and I moved to The United States and, we decided to leave our home, which was in Egypt. Moving has been an extended process with "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly". We left with bitterness inside; as home was like a piece of us. It was a small-scaled, modest apartment in a magnificent neighborhood. Although it was a small apartment, it was my huge castle that had been protecting me for more than seventeen years. Everything happened in my castle is the reason I am who I am today, and as my home built me more a long time, it's about time for me to build my new home.
My neighborhood was not just a place where some people were living beside each other, it was more like a beehive full of tasteful moments and sweet feelings. Small, safe, and friendly- that was the atmosphere of my neighborhood. The neighborhood was divided into four blocks, every block had four buildings and in every building there were five stories with four apartments each. Having the neighborhood divided into blocks made it very safe for me and my friends to play in the street. Summer time was the best for us. We were playing day and night-, basketball, soccer and cycling. Fun-filled noise was easy to be heard miles away. Of course, with all of that fun, nothing was more perfect than a snack to renew our energy. Every mother in our neighborhood would prepare a small snack for all of us, so we could go on with playing. I can still taste the scrumptious cookies in my mouth till this moment.
Block number one, building four, apartment two, was the location of my apartment. Our small nest was about the size of two of this classroom. It had two bedrooms and one bathroom. If you walked from the door you would see an open kitchen on your right hand side and a living room on your left hand side. All the way at the end of the living room you would notice a small corridor, in the corridor there are two rooms and a bathroom. Like every nest, ours felt warm and cozy. Surprisingly it would still fit a lot of people. My mother would go and invite all our family and friends, and there would be room for everyone to share the feeling of warm love.
My mother was the queen of the kitchen, yes the kitchen was her own kingdom and no one was allowed to mess with her properties except if you received her permission. That was probably because she is a great cook, she was a chef who makes her own recipes and every meal tasted better than going to a restaurant. I was the student who stood with eyes wide open to watch and learn.
Since we had an open kitchen, the living room would always had two scents, the first was the smell of my mother's delicious meals and the second would be the smell of detergents that I would use to clean the kitchen. Finally the whole apartment always smelled clean and refreshing.
Down to the living room, my father -who was an interior designer- had deigned it in a simple classic way just to make the room comfortable for everyone. I remember when it was night time, he would go and turns off all the lights and only remains the vivid moon light coming through the window. He would then go and turn his gramophone on, playing a record of classic piano then he would go and relax on the couch. That's how I went to sleep every night. On the next morning I would wake up feeling the heat of the sun rays penetrating the window reaching my hands. Open my eyes to see all the details in my room. My room was my favorite spot in the whole apartment, it was the place where I have spent most of my time drawing my dreams, it was the place where I can hide and cry when I was upset.
Days and nights, year after year this place held me since I was a baby up till I grew up, this place saw me when I was happy and when I was sad .My home taught me how to love, care, share, and have fun. But as for me looking now to myself I found that now is the time for me to build a new home. A new home with all of my new visions and targets, a new home that can represent me from now.
My character was created with the creation of every detail in that home like most of us got affected with our home and backgrounds. Every home has positive and negative impacts on us but whether your home was impressive or not, whether it built you or it destroyed you, today is the day where you can build your own home with your own vision for your future.
Although my home is the reason I am who I am today, I think now is the time for me to build a new home, where it is going to be the reason I am who I am in the future
