Winter, the chilliest season of the year, is especially pronounced in polar and temperate regions. It occurs due to the tilt of the Earth's axis away from the sun, leading to shorter days and longer nights in either the northern or southern hemisphere. Growing up in Europe has significantly shaped my identity and values. In this region, we experience the four seasons distinctly. Every child should have the chance to grow up amidst the enchantment of snow days at school, the delight of Christmas movies, the warmth of hot chocolate before bedtime, and the joy of gathering with family and friends. Among the four seasons of the year – summer, winter, autumn, and spring – winter holds a special place in my heart due to the holidays, weather, and cherished memories it brings. In this essay I will share why I love winter season.
To commence, my earliest winter memory dates back to a visit to my Auntie Sharon's house in Florida when I was just three years old. Despite the passage of time, the recollections of those moments remain vivid and cheerful. Many of my cherished winter holidays were spent with my mother's close friend, Louise. I remember the house filled with the melodious tunes of Christmas music, and I can't help but feel a sense of nostalgia when I hear those beloved Christmas hymns and songs today. Additionally, at the age of five, I joined the school choir in my private primary school in England, which coincided with the holiday season. Lastly, I hold fond memories of visiting my Grandmother after she moved away from England.
Moreover, there is something undeniably comforting about the cold weather. Growing up in Britain, we celebrate Bonfire Night, which commemorates Guy Fawkes' failed gunpowder plot to assassinate King James on November 5th, 1605. It's an annual event we eagerly anticipate. Fireworks burst into the night sky in a symphony of vibrant and extravagant colors, creating a picturesque spectacle. In London and many open parks, people gather to savor food, camaraderie, and music, creating a vibrant atmosphere akin to a small carnival. Whenever snow blankets the landscape, we relish the opportunity to don our favorite winter coats, gloves, and scarves. The world appears brighter under a blanket of snow. While snow days might extend the school year, the thrill of one to three snow days during winter is unparalleled. I have a particular snow day etched into my memory – a day filled with snowball fights, building snow forts and snowmen, and exhilarating sled rides down hills.
In conclusion, winter holds a special place in my heart due to the holidays, weather, and cherished memories it brings. The enchantment of snow days, the joy of Christmas movies, the warmth of hot chocolate before bedtime, the pleasure of festive meals with family, and the sense of togetherness with friends all contribute to making winter a season worth celebrating. Additionally, the sight of a snowy landscape and the opportunity to bundle up in cozy winter attire add to the charm of this season.
