Unemployment is a social problem that has a huge effect on society. When there are a lot of unemployed people it becomes a social issue and damages a lot of individuals and their ability to function with the world. Unemployment can lead to a lot of hardships such as being homeless, having low-self-esteem, social isolation, family issues, crime, poor health, debt, etc. When someone is trying to find a job they tend to search for up to 2 weeks-1 month and then with no luck they become discouraged and stop. This is when policies should come into place to help lower the rate of unemployment.
Over the years there have been policies and strategies set up to help reduce the unemployment rate. On the strategy side, there is the demand side of policies which is supposed to reduce the unemployment caused by the recession. Then there is the supply side of policies which is the natural rate of unemployment. Then some policies are in place to reduce unemployment, the monetary policy which would be subtracting interest rates to boost Aggregate Demand (AD). The fiscal policy which would be lowering taxes to also boost AD. Educational training would also help reduce structural unemployment. The Geographical subsidies to get different firms to invest money in helpless areas. We could also lower minimum wage so we could reduce the real wage unemployment, which is still questionable. To have a chance at this social problem then four policy practice skills would be needed.
There are four types of policy practice skills which include; analytic, political, interactional, and value-clarifying skills. Analytic skills are needed within this social problem because we could collect data from a large group of unemployed individuals, analyze the information and try to figure out the best way to solve and improve it. The next skill would be a political skill which is very important because we can consult experts on the issue and get a political viewpoint on the policies and laws set in place for the unemployed. Interactional skills are all about communication, gestures, facial expressions, and body language which is the basic skill that any individual would need to be taken seriously. The next skill would be the value-clarifying skill in which you would need to have a clear understanding of your awareness for what you need to face unemployment, or why you are still unemployed in the first place so you can make real change.
To make real change you have to first form social groups which would be hard because you would need all of these skills to successfully succeed. You cannot just have one single skill because when facing a social problem you will be hit from every angle there is and if you are not prepared they will shut down everything that you have worked so hard for. If you cannot think critically, politically, or analytically then society will look at you different, which is more than likely why you are unemployed anyway. A single skill will also not suffice because “one tool is not enough for a whole car” which means one mindset will not allow you to go far.
In conclusion, as stated in the beginning of the essay, unemployment is a social problem that has a huge effect on society. There will always be many unemployed individuals, but the plan is to face this social issue head-on. To face the issue you have four policy practice skills to meet a certain standard that society has placed upon us, analytic, political, interactional, and value-clarifying. These skills are the blueprint to make a successful change and bring awareness to the unemployment injustice. You cannot just have one of these skills because when facing a social problem you will be hit from every angle there is and you will need to be prepared at all times.
