In the United States, the participants in the program Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), also known as “Dreamers”, have faced many issues since Donald Trump’s presidency started. DACA is a policy of immigration that allows individuals who were brought at a very young age to stay here in the United States. President Trump has attempted to remove their privileges of staying in the United States. The main issue they face is being deported back to the country they were born in. This essay will discuss a political cartoon to include the themes of personal responsibility, social responsibility, and comparative analysis.
In the political cartoon, Donald Trump and Jeff Sessions are portrayed as monsters. Personally, I know people who see Donald Trump in very similar ways. I knew a family who came here from another country and had young kids born over there. At that time, Trump was not the president, but the parents feared putting their children under the DACA policy. This represents an ethical decision on behalf of the parents since they were considering any future consequences such as what Trump is attempting to do in the present time.
The political cartoon is demonstrating a child in bed asking, “No monsters in here tonight, right?” and Trump is inside the closet peeking out. This is trying to put across the message that dreamers have fear for Trump and being deported back to their countries. Jeff Sessions and Donald Trump are both basically saying that there is nothing they should be afraid of. In reality, this affects the public and how they view these political leaders since they lie to the public most of the time. Our national community needs to see the importance of this issue and understand that it is affecting dreamers.
In another political cartoon, the theme of segregation and immigration are represented. Two kids are each standing in front of a door and each one says, “whites only” and “no Latinos” along with “new anti-immigrant laws.” In both cartoons, the children are facing discrimination and are being affected by political laws. The images both have a different message, but at the same time, they are demonstrating that our nation is affecting children and their futures. It is important to understand that young generations are the future of this world and that what they face in their childhood, will affect their future for better or worse.
Despite being threatened of losing their place in the United States, dreamers keep fighting for their privileges and proving that they belong in this country. They may fear Trump and political laws, but communities engage to prevent them from being affected. By making better decisions, knowing their responsibilities, and focusing on their goals, dreamers defend their positions and build better futures. Considering and learning from strong people like them, future generations will have many more opportunities and a better lifestyle. This essay discussed a political cartoon to include the themes of personal responsibility, social responsibility, and comparative analysis.
