The word guidance is said to be the equivalent term of “positive discipline” which means leading the children to reach their full potential through the process of moulding their skills and abilities at a very young age. This word may have different roots such as leading, showing the way or directing, still they fall on a single meaning and purpose. Applying the principle of positive discipline doesn’t mean that we will let the children “go free”, make their own decisions, and let them do thing on their own, instead, we serve us instruments to walk with them as they learn how to be independent. Guidance should always revolve on the belief that it should focus on building up a child’s self-regulation and self-esteem rather that controlling them and threatening them to possess the appropriate behaviour. Its goal is intrinsic; it is not a matter of having a good display. As an adult, a teacher, a parent or a guardian, we need to always make sure that we check our own emotions so we can offer the children the best quality guidance they deserve.
a. As an ELCC Student and Future ECEI believe that these guidance strategies is a great help for me as an ELCC student, because this helps me get ready for a bigger picture, not just a practicum student in a day care but a ELCC professional in the future. I feel so lucky that at this time, I was able to learn the guidance strategies and able to understand it so, when time comes that I’m already an ELCC professional I will be able to apply these strategies.
b. Co-workersIt will be very evident that these strategies would really help all the professionals, staffs, and providers in the field of ELCC to practice our career. These strategies will also help us to bond as we share our thoughts about a certain matter regarding our career. This will serve as a bridge to more understanding and learning from each other’s experience.
c. Parents These strategies will help the parents guide their children in the right path, because these strategies’ objective is to produce independent, self-reliant, and confident individuals in the future.
d. Children I believe, the children will be the most beneficial with these strategies as these mainly focus on making them worthy through leading them on the right track. These focus on moulding them as they reach their full potential until they come to the point that they will be able to make their own decisions.
*Real-life Implementation of the Strategy Among all the strategies I have this one strategy which I like most, the strategy where you are giving signals or cues to appropriate behaviour. This is my favourite because I got to encounter this every day, in our home. As I have two cousins, 7-year old girl and 10-year old boy, teaching them the appropriate behaviour is very important, and my auntie is just so creative in teaching them. Our toilet has papers attach saying “Don’t forget to flush me!”, their towels are hanging and there are labels on it which indicate their names with a cue saying “Don’t let me fall, I’ll get dirty!”, in our kitchen a big saying says “Always say PLEASE & THANK YOU!”, and lastly, all switch for lights in our house has a picture showing turning on and off the lights. I truly think that this a very effective strategy as my cousins, even me follow the cues and I am planning to use this too in the future instances like having my practicum and being an ECE.
The visual resource that I created would be helpful to all including parents, ELCC professionals, providers and of course the children. The following are the potential uses of my resource:
This resource will mainly inform the audience about the guidance strategies, the basic definition in an easy and friendly manner which is easy to understand.
The audience will not just be informed about these strategies, but will have a full understanding about each because the resource used words which can easily be comprehended.
After viewing the resource and having a full understanding of it, the resource also provide the audience examples so they can apply it in real-life experiences. Through these examples, they can imitate it or develop it more to become a successful parent, or guardian, or teacher, or a provider in the field who leads the path on guiding children towards reaching their full potential as good individuals.
“The attention and environment you provide shapes your child’s brain development for life.” – Erik Erikson. This simply tells us that how a parent or guardian had risen his/her child places a great impact in a child’s development in the future. That it is a matter of relationship between the person providing the love and attention, the environment, and the children themselves. “As teachers, we have a vision for our work and a hope for children. We hope them to develop in all domains and to satisfy their inborn curiosity by learning eagerly and joyfully (Marion, 2015)”.
