How Poverty is The Main Cause of Crime

Introduction: “Poverty is the mother of all crimes”, Marcus Aurelia (121-180AD). Background: It has been a global issue that people are facing poverty, a state where people are facing financial issues and lack of daily essential needs. Thesis statement: I do agree that poverty is the main cause of crime. This essay analyzes how poverty affects crime rates. It can be due to a variety of reasons: starvation, impoverished family background, and failed government policies.

Topic sentence: Firstly, the effects of poverty are inextricably linked with the hunger scene, which is a form of craving food. Food is essential for the human body to generate energy, repair muscles, growth and to maintain body functions. Evidence & citing: Without food humans will occur malnutrition and starvation which lead to death. “Hunger makes a thief of any man” quoted by Pearl S. Buck. Therefore, people who don't have the ability to purchase their needs to fulfil their hunger will try to steal foods from supermarkets and rob people for money. For example, a 25 years old man has been stealing scrap metals because he wants to provide for his family. He was caught stealing metal inside a factory and his lawyer is trying to defend him with a conditional discharge as he still has to support his two children.

Topic sentence: Secondly, an impoverished family background is another reason that causes crime. Evidence & citing: Children from such families could not have the chance to attend school and develop their social skills. With all the factors that such families provide will strongly influence child development. Commentary: For example, a child will feel depressed and meaningless living on the earth because there is no good background and they have a mind sets of it would not be success. Feeling of hopelessness occurs due to poverty. Through self-renunciation, children will start to abuse drugs to relieve their stress which is known as committing crime. Furthermore, children will tend to have criminal offenses as they have no idea of how to differentiate on what is right or wrong. Therefore, we can conclude that impoverished families that failed to provide care and education to their children might lead them to become a criminal.

Topic sentence: Thirdly, the political problems and poor economy of a country is the reason for poverty which enhances the crime index. Evidence & citing: Receiving low wages and increase of unemployment rate, people tend to confront financially insecure and deprivation. Commentary: For example, Venezuela is facing political and economic crises due to corruptions of government and failed government policies. Furthermore, government often attempts to refute claims of high crime and murder rate. Thus, this result Venezuela is one of the deadliest and most violent country in the world in 2018. As because Venezuela government is always escaping from their responsibility and did not provide any welfare for low income citizens, hence, citizen face difficulties oftenly which direct them to record a criminal offense. Venezuela government should take action by responding to the crime cases and give financial support to the poverty families.

Conclusion paragraph: In conclusion, I agree that poverty is behind most crimes and it has been a global issue because hunger, impoverished family background, and failed government policies will increase the chances of poor people to act crimes. Thus, I suggest that the government should take serious action to these problems and whoever has the ability should help the poor in order to overcome this global issue.
