As a teenager, how many of us would have grown considering, “wow!!! Deepika Padukone is so beautiful”, I exactly want to look like her or how many of us would have looked in the mirror and come across the thought that we don’t fit in the paradigms of beauty? How many of us starve ourselves to achieve the considered ideal figure by society? It's very facile to compare all our flaws to virtually perfect images that we see in fashion magazines.
What exactly is self-esteem? It may be defined as one’s pride or confidence in one’s worth. Despite fashion magazines containing information regarding beauty, fashion, diet, women’s issue, skin, etc. has bombarded our minds with that perfect body image and ageless flawless skin. Apart from these, major portions of the magazines are devoted to advertisements, which shows the latest trends, the newest beauty products, hair care range, and perfumes. None of the magazines ever shows the invested time,
Money, airbrush techniques, editing, and promotions involved behind it. There are scarcely any columns related to actual women issues.
There’s a famous saying, “How would your life be different if…. you stopped allowing others to dilute or poison your day with their opinions. Let today be the day… you stand strong in the truth of your beauty and journey through your day without validation of others”. A survey has shown that people who are exposed to fashion magazine report to have a negative effect which can trigger eating disorder behavior, the feeling of weight-related frustration, guilt during and after eating, depression and low self-esteem. I believe that fashion magazines irrespective of men magazine, or a women magazine objectify women; they advertise women in the same would advertise a watch or maybe a car or anything else. We can’t ignore apart from setting paradigms of the perfect body these magazines has also affected pockets of commoners. Many of us even think to wear expensive pieces such as Prada sunglass or Louis Vuitton bag or Dior perfume, etc. can make them socially acceptable and build their status.
As an individual, we need to focus on our achievements, accomplishments and understand that we all are different from each other and beautiful in our way. Accepting our flaws make us look better. Fashion magazines do have negative impacts but it’s us who needs to understand the incorrect stereotype being forced. The happier you are, the more beautiful you look.
